4.56 gears from a 4cyl Toyota

So ive been reading tons of posts about gears and it's def confusing for someone not super familiar with gears. So Ive been thinking about getting an east coast gear supply gears in 4.88 but I do worry about all the highway I dive to get anywhere( talking 2hrs min).

So started looking into the 4cyl 4.56 gears. It sounds like you cant just buy a third member and swap it out with my v6 model. Do I have that wrong? So I would need to swap the whole axle?

Just trying to understand how easy it would be to swap the factory 4.56 front and rear. Looks like I can get front and rear for under $1500 vs $3500 from eggs with arb locker

Thanks

Check that the 4.56 Toyota gears are good for the power of the V6 engine. Are you thinking of regearing because of bigger tires? Otherwise there's no reason to, IMO.

Gear Ratio Calculator

Been running Yukon 4.56 gears 5VZ Auto 4x4 33" tires since 10-2020 sweet spot for me.
OD off/3rd gear of Trans is 1-1 ratio my rpms 3100 at 65mph, OD on 2500 rpms at 65 mph.
Looking at color bands of chart my setup on edge of 4.88's & 4.56's in 3rd gear.
MPG's see 18 hwy. regularly. Give Yukon a call about 4 cyl questions.

The only downside to the factory 4.56's is that they use a different carrier than all the other factory ratios - so you can't (easily) swap to other gear ratios in the future. It bolts up the same to the axle housing and has the same strength.

Going to 4.88 gears from 4.10 is almost exactly 20% different - so if you were cruising at 2k rpm, you'd now be at 2.4k rpm. It isn't that bad unless you want to push the MPH. I have done a few long drives now with 4.88's and 32" tires. I just keep the speed under 70 and its just fine.

Re: Carriers, didn't know that then, knowing it now it a steer clear direction.
Gear change 4.10 Clamshell 4.30 OE RR locker to 4.56 plug n play no worries.

4.88's would have put speed limiter in the picture DD lost some offroad balanced things out
with front locker been working.

Yeah I point of gear is ive had 235/85/16 tires for the last 10 years and my engines almost 280k miles( Ive got a v6). Put all the local hills in the mix and I struggle to use OD on anything other than flat. Just looking for the best way to get some of that back. Id consider going to 33" if I went to 4.88.

Im running 4.10 stock gears. I think 4.30 tech gets me back to stock but since its is basically my camping/offroad rig I dont mind a little more lower end power but dont want hurt mpg too much. I did 10hours a highway getting to idaho last summer for an offroad trip so that still has to be manageable.

Was just thinking if I can get 4.56 front and rear for alot cheaper it might be the way to go.

Thanks for the info, that does sound about right. I think im 2200RPM in OD at 65mph now.

Yeah no worries on the diff carrier. If I got a 4.56 from a junkyard id still have my 4.10 housings if I wanted to change later. Sounds like 4.56 or 4.88 would work. maybe 4.88 if I buy new ones and 4.56 if I can find a factory set for cheap thanks.

I think that's a good plan. I only lost ~1mpg from the re-gear (18 mpg highway). Most of the poor fuel economy at highway speeds is due to wind resistance...

phattyduck calimobber, how do 4.88's weigh the better choice.

Debated choices when deciding have yet to figure out what I left
on the table if anything.

Hi! I have just joined this forum and I am having trouble understanding how to post. Could you please help me?
I have owned, and loved 4, 4Runners. All SR5's, 2WD and all the metallic metal colors. I am looking for a new-er color. My dream is Lunar Rock but I'm having trouble finding anything in SR5, 2WD with the black grill and bumpers. I'm told that not many were manufactured with these options in Lunar Rock. What have y'all seen? Thanks!

There is a bunch of calculator's to help you pick. The simplest way I used was AI and just said I have a 2002 4runner with automatic and 4.10 gears. give me a chart showing comparison between gears showing 4.10, 4.30, 4.56.4.88. whats ever you want.

Mainly the higher the number the better gear ratio like a bicycle when you peddle faster but go slower speeds but its easier going up steeper stuff. So the bigger number the easier it is for your engine but the downside/plus is RPM go up so higher its more in the powerband but also louder and worse mpg. So your trying to find the best rpm you can handle.

4.88 would be nice for the power easily holding 65 on small hills but you gotta deal with the higher rpm. Most people worried to spend all the time and money going a small jump say to 4.30 or 4.56 worring it wont be enough and still have the low power issue. But I think 4.56 would hold the Speeds I want for most conditions and its possible to find it in junkyards so its alot cheaper.

sample since Its a pain to post pictures here.

Here's the RPM table (engine RPM, rounded to nearest whole RPM):
4.10 gears, 340F auto tranny in overdrive with 235/85/16 tires.

Speed (mph.......4.1:1........4.3:1........4.56:1......4.88:1
60...................1844.........1936.........2051.........2193
70...................2160 ........2268........2403.........2569
80...................2475..........2600........2755.........2945

Thats AI so could be off.
