How much (if any) armor do I need?

OK!

I'm pretty much set on the OME medium duty from Toytec for my lift.

For sliders, I think I'm going to go with the Rocky Road Supersliders ($409 + shipping). The price is competitive, they bolt on, and they ship in about 2 weeks.

My other option is Addicted Off-Road's Rock Sliders ($325, local pickup free). The downside is they need to be welded on and they come unpainted(?). Tough call.

Does anyone besides Budbuilt make skid plates for the 4th gen?

Thanks! So The Man-A-Fre front engine and tranny skids would be $440 + shipping.

Budbuilt's front and mid skid plates would be $600 + shipping.

These prices all include powder-coating.

Is this an apple's to apple's comparison? If so the choice seems simple...

I don't have any experience with the BudBuilt's equipment but for protection I would guess it would be comparable. My understanding is that the Man-A-Fre set-up hugs closer to the vehicle allowing more clearance.

Man-A-Fre has a hammered finish neutral colored powdercoating. So if you want something fancy, it would be BudBuilt. Keep in mind that they are 'skid' plates; their purpose is to get scratched/beat up, it's much less obvious on the neutral colored M-A-F's.

If you opt to get a transfer case skidplate in the future, I'd probably suggest going with BudBuilt because Man-A-Fre does not have a transfer case skid plate available for a V8, probably never will, and I doubt the brands are interchangable.

I think the Man-A-Fre's are great, but of course I'd give props to something I've got on my 4R! :)
 
I've had my eye on the M-A-F skids for a while now, but an in the same boat on prioritizing protection. I think that the sliders need to come first and am shopping for something decent, bolt-on, and I want them to stick out enough to be used as a step. There seems to be a lot of options!
 
Have you looked at the Rocky Road Supersliders? They might fit the bill for you. Are you adding a lift as well?

I want to be able to use my sliders as a step as well. I'm not convinced how well this will work, though.

If you like the MAF stuff, you both may want to consider their sliders as well

4runner Rock Sliders 4+PLUS

They are more expensive than most you've probably encountered but they are seriously sturdy. They are bolted on, but there is a second piece that gets welded on to your frame that provides additional strength and support for the sliders then the sliders bolt on to the reinforcement piece. Also they are fully adjustable. They stick out enough to provide a stepping area and to help prevent door dings from parking lots and actually do their job on the trail beautifully!

I like 4Plus/MAF.... can you tell ;)
