How much life can I expect? What should I ask?

I am looking for a 3rd gen (preferably 1998) 4Runner, and I am wondering how much life I can expect out of these beasts.

Would a truck with 140,000 miles that has been very well maintained (timing belt done) last well past 200,000 miles? Is this the norm?

Also, when buying a used 4Runner with over 120,000 miles, what kinds of questions should I ask the seller in terms of the status of the car? Are there any particular items, like the timing belt, that I would want to be new/replaced?

My 4Runner has 206,000 miles and still running strong. Timing belt and water pump history is always nice!

I would ask if they have maintance records. You should ask about the timing belt and water pump. These two items tend to be replaced together, normally about every 90,000 miles, but it does vary.

Getting a Carfax report can never hurt either.

I have 144k on mine right now and it is running very well and I have no doubt it should go well past 250k.

Ask about axles seals and check on the backside of the drums to see if you see any visible leakage.
