How much more at a dealer?

So how much more is purchasing a used 4runner from a dealer really worth? There's a pretty large gap on KBB for 3rd gen private party vs dealer. I feel like I get better information from a private party who has service records in comparison to a dealer who took it on trade in and has no idea about service history.

They do an excellent job of cleaning them up and putting them through some sort of safety inspection (I have no idea what this involves though) and saying their mechanics looked it over and it's sound, blah, blah, blah....

But how much more is reasonable at a dealer and why?

putting them through a safety inspection is one thing, but it's up to the Used Car Manager to decide which items actually get fixed. If you're interested in a particular car, ask to see the used car inspection. Not just the items that were addressed, but the items that were recommended to be fixed and weren't. That'll give you some perspective as to what kind of car it is. Go from there on pricing. Obviously, if they did 4 wheel brakes and 4 tires and a lot of maintenance, you're going to pay for it.

Getting a copy of the inspection report makes sense.

Turns out the dealer I was chatting with has a mandatory $600 doc fee which makes negotiating a reasonable price on a 99 about impossible. Oh well...

Dealers have to give some sort of warranty (even if it's two weeks or Tuesday whichever comes first), which costs $. Private party doesn't have to warranty.
