How much should I pay?

I am looking at a 2010 4runner limited 4x4 with navigation and no 3rd row and wanted to get an idea of what a fair price to pay would be. The truck has about 15k miles on it and is in great condition. They are wanting nearly 39k for it but after price shopping for 2011 4runners, i've found they can be had for about 40K (of course sales tax not included) with the same options. With this many miles and being a 2010 I couldn't see paying more than 35-36k.

What do you guys think?

Thanks!
Mike

The 4runner maintains it's value at a higher rate than other used vehicles. For a good starting point, look at the difference between trade in value (which the dealer may have paid for the vehicle) vs the selling price from a dealer for said vehicle. A few good places to start, look at

Keep in mind that the first 15k on a car includes break in period, and hopefully it was treated gently. There's a lot of personal factors on buying used vs buying new, and I believe both have their relative merits. Buying new should include maint. for a preset time (check with toyota.com), buying used you do exclude some depreciation, but these are solid vehicles.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Winstondvm! I know what you're saying and it does appear that 4runners do hold their value better than other cars. I'm just looking for a good deal on what would be my first 4runner. I just can't see spending this much on a car almost 2 years old with the 2012's coming out in a few months when the brand new price of a 2011 limited with all of the options i want would be 39,900. I think if I do take a look at the 2010 I'm going to have to cap how much i'm willing to pay at about 35,500 given the price of a brand new vehicle. This may go against KBB and Nada, but in this economy and current gas prices I think this is all i'm willing to pay.

Throw $35,500 at em. If they don't take, walk..

Then wait for a new 2012 to come out in a few months.

I got my new 2010 trail in October of 2010 for about 37.5k. MSRP was about 42k. I brought in the best price I could find in Texas on a comparable TE, and they beat it by $250.00. I told them they could take off the automatic start (they refused) as it was a port-added option. Since I had never owned a Toyota before (new or otherwise), it was a learning experience because there's things that each dealer group (i.e. Gulf States Toyota in this case) adds after the SUV hits the US. Since a dealer group adds it, you can guarantee that they don't do it for their health, they do it for high profit margins. Look around, there's more than one fish out there, and I believe you can get a better price.

Naturally your location will dictate what you pay.

I picked up a 2010 Limited Edition (Mother of Peal white...the only thing I'm not too wild about..) with just about every accessory available in it, for $36k 3 weeks ago. It has 19k on the odo.
I might add, I got the dealer to throw in a bug deflector and roof rack crossbars too.

Yikes, that's a great price. With a 42k sticker price that must be a TE with Nav and KDSS. I am shopping TE's with Nav. in Los Angeles and the common price is about $500 over invoice or ~$39,500.

I bought a new 2011, msrp $42,000 4Runner for 700 below invoice, for $38,000 back in February, but since the Japan earthquake, you will be lucky to find a used one for that price now..

15k and they want how much for it? When looking for a Blizzard pearl limited one dealer offered me their 2011 demo with 4,100 miles on it for 34,800. I thought that is a great price, however I turned it down because well lets face it it is a used car and more than likely beat to **** on their demo driving.

15K miles is a lot of milage for what they want. Wait and get a new one for close to that price.

That depends.

My 4Runner was considered a "demo" but in reality, Toyota gives Kevin Calabro a new 4Runner every year as part of a marketing thing.

Who is Calabro? -> The Kevin Calabro Show on 710 ESPN Seattle - Kevin Calabro - MyNorthwest.com

Calabro put 19k on this truck then returned it in May and picked up his 2011 model that he gets to drive for a year. We bought it 3 weeks after he returned it as a pre-certified vehicle with a bumper to bumper 7 year-100k warranty (good through 119k or 7 years, whichever comes first)
