How NOT to subscribe to threads

I think my profile does this automatically. Not sure. How do I unsubcribe from threads, and how do I keep from subscribing in the future (I just noticed the drop-down below, but its automatically set to subscribe - how do I change the auto settings)?

I've looked under the "User CP", subscribed threads, but I see no options to subscribe or unsubscribe. It only lists threads from what I can tell.

Click on "User CP" then click "Edit Options" it is under "Default Thread Subscription Mode"

User CP > Settings and Options > Edit Options > Messaging and Notification > Default Thread Subscription Mode.
