How to: access and remove the subwoofer

Perhaps try both sides of the speaker, as said previously? Also, ensure the bass is on "5", to magnify the effects. I noticed while testing the new subwoofer that some songs barely made a boom, while others boomed quite a bit...
Lastly, what were you getting from the old subwoofer? Poor quality sound or no sound at all?

OK through much trial and error here's what I've got.
I can hook up the + and - from each side of the original speaker to the + and - of the new speaker and get nothing. I can invert them and still get nothing. (Red and yellow on one side of the new speaker and black and green on the other side)
I can hook up the + and - from each side of the original speaker to a + and - on the opposite sides of the new speaker and I get nothing (red and black on one side green and yellow on the other) I was thinking that maybe instead of + and - being left side and right side they were top and bottom.
I can hook up the Red on one side and the yellow on the other with a wire connecting the other two + and - terminals and I get sound. Same if I use just green and black.
ALSO I can hook up the red and yellow OR the green and black on one side and patch the + and - together on the other side and I get sound.
So basically I have figured out two ways for it to work without using all the parts... I know leftover parts are normal in many cases but it would worry me with wiring.... especially since the first time I installed a radio in a vehicle I melted all the wires to the dash lights.... that's a whole other story.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

Same problem w/ me. Heavy, grotesque rattling that was causing major anxiety to any, normal listeners.
To answer your questions/comments I was getting sound before but a really bad rattle. I had turned down the bass to alleviate some of the annoying rattle sound. I did remember to turn the bass up so I would have sound coming through. That was good advice anyway
For what it's worth, I'm not a stereo expert but did some stuff on the side back in my younger days.
From what I gather, the stock subwoofer runs off 2ohms. Most replacement subwoofers are 4 ohms. This will cause low or no sound. If your subwoofer is a dual cone (easy way to check is there are +/- on each side) and is a 4ohms (should say on box it is a 2 x 4ohm) then you can wire it up in Parallel and get the desired 2ohm resistance.

Your rattling might be coming from a loose wire or the subwoofer is not securly mounted or something back there is loose. Maybe try throwing some pillow foam back behind the speaker or under the wire so it is not rattling against the plastic. OR if you don't have a grill in front of the speaker, the air is pushing against the plastic trim, so you might have to cut a hole or put some felt on the inside of the plastic to dampen the vibration or cut a hole and put some speaker grills over it. This is just a guess. Hope this helps.

I followed this. And ended up replacing allspeakers, amp, and sub. Ran all new 12 & 14 gauge speaker wires.

I just did mine today. I put the Red wire on positive red connector on the one side of the speaker and the other wire routed with that red wire on to the negative black post next to it. Then I took the other wire set and put the Black wire on the positive red speaker connector and the other wire routed with the black on the Negative post next to it.
Also thanks for those who made this so easy to do. I put in the Rockford speaker and it sounds good to me.
Just wanted to say big THANK YOU to DannyG for posting the step-by-step guide for the subwoofer replacement.
I used this guide this past weekend to change my blown sub out for the Pioneer TS-SW2002D2. I used this sub because this forum mentioned that it worked great with the stock amp and boy I can confirm that it does!
It sounds sooooo good and really hits hard for an 8''
Now just need to replace the rest of the speakers lol.

I’m new here, sorry if this has already been asked. I know it’s an old thread but I’m going to take a shot here and see if anyone can give me some advice. I have an ‘07 4Runner. All the music has completely shut down. I’m not tech savvy whatsoever, but I’m pretty sure it’s the amp. Two of my mechanic friends agreed. I found an amp that I saw in this forum, and I’d like to know if it will work with my model 4runner. I want as close to plug ‘n play as possible. I chose the JL Audio J2 250/1. Found on eBay for $150. What do you guys/girls think? Any advice is very much appreciated!
Was tempted to buy a new sub but don’t really want to spend too much, and the speaker still works fine.

You will need a 5 channel amp instead of a monoblock.
There are a few that come in the stock size but once you have the amplifier in your speakers will likely blow very quickly. They do not take much power to run....and they aren't the greatest either.....but you're after just music.
You'll need 4 corner speakers and an 8" sub. They don't need to be anything special but make sure you get the factory sizes. Crutchfield can help or tacotunes.
If you search the forum you can find the stock amp dimensions and then you go shopping for something that size or smaller.
You'll need to get an amplifier install kit for a 4 channel amplifier and you'll need a speaker line converter in order to use the factory stereo.
Or.....if you want to keep things simple....find a used stock amplifier for the 4runner and that's all you have to do.

Thank you for chiming in so quickly! I’m very tempted to just buy a used stock amp, but afraid I will get a lemmon. Most are over $100 on eBay. Probably an impossible question to answer, but what is the likely hood of getting a lemmon? I have no desire to switch out speakers, just want a new amp. Like you said, just need some plain ole music.

I looked up ofc wiring amp kit and it’s considerably more expensive. Why is that? If I may ask, why is BOSS not a good option? And what abt the kicker line converter? Is that ok?

Ofc ( oxygen free copper) is more expensive because it’s copper.
Cca ( copper clad aluminum) is essentially aluminum that is coated in a thin layer of copper.
Kicker loc is good.

I have no clue. I’m still trying to figure out what will fit/work with my vehicle (07 4runner). All I want to do is replace the failed stock amp, that’s it. The speakers are fine. I’ve never done anything like this so that’s why I’m asking a million questions.
I was going to buy a used stock amp off EBay but scared of getting a lemon. The prices I’m seeing from the reputable sellers are almost as much as buying a new aftermarket amp. I was hoping it would just be plug ‘n play but apparently that’s not happening. Thank you for taking the time to give me some advice. I do appreciate it very much.
