How to access tailgate lift controls?

After this winter's ice melt solution I have noticed a little rust stain coming around the bezel for the license plate mount on the rear door. The lift handle is getting a little sticky too. I want to take it apart and clean/lube the inside of the rear tailgate but can't see any screws or simple access. Does it just pop off?

Try removing the inside plastic panel of the rear door held by a bunch of 10mm hex heads and 4 snap clips. Inside you'll see some screws holding the licence plate bezel in place, at the same time you'll have access to the lift gate latch cable for servicing.

The plastic panel only has 1 bolt that I remember, the 1 that holds the strap, then the black metal cover has a bunch of 10mm bolts.

I was thinking way ahead...you were right it's the metal plate behind the plastic cover that's held by 10mm bolts...Duh! How'd that one slipped my mind?:bash:

Thanks,

I was wondering if the whole thing was held on by snap clips or something. Good thing I did not start prying away.
