How To: Add a replacement immobilizer key (G-Key)

So I had a set of keys stolen a few months ago and I struggled to find a definitive guide on how to add a spare key for the 5th gen. The dealer here wanted $350 for a replacement key and I couldn't stomach that. So I did some research on here and info available online for Toyota "G" keys. The good news it's an easy and pretty straight forward process.

Note: These are instructions on how to add a non-smart key (not push start)

What You'll Need(With Amazon Links)
•Your original master key
•A Windows XP/7 32-Bit Computer
•ODB2 Cable + Techstream Software
•Replacement G-Chip Key

Step 1: Go to your local locksmith and have them cut your spare key

Step 2: Install the Techstream software that was included with your ODB2 cable. Make sure you follow the instructions included on the CD closely.

Step 3: Connect your PC to your truck via the ODB2 cable and launch the Techstream software.

Step 4: Add the immobilizer key to your ECU by following the steps in this Youtube Video
(NOTE: Do not follow his steps to add the wireless remote)

Step 5: Add the wireless remote to your ECU by following the steps in this Youtube Video

That's it! You're all done. Takes about 15 minutes of work and $50. You also now have a great way to pull error codes from your truck or program additional options. When I have time I'll try to run Techstream on my Mac using VirtualBox. It was kind of a pain to track down an 11 year old PC to make this all work :P Enjoy!

Ok I bought the exact same key from amazon, and took it to my local locksmith, they cut it, and programmed the key with out issue. They could not though program the wirless remote. She said she attempted it multiple times but it would not recognize the remote. Just two hours later you posted this. Very informative and thank you. The battery is good.

I opened the case to the new key and the "guts" was a 4 button remote, not a 3 like my original. could that have been an issue?

I had a locksmith and a hardware store refuse to do a cut only.
I went to a Pick a Part junkyard and there was a kid with an old school key cutter. $2 and he went with me to the T4 to make sure it worked.

Then I did the Techstream thing.

people dont want to cut your keys cause say its a $500.00 key, and they mess it up. no going back and they dont want to be liable.

Im surprised they were able to program the immobilizer. Did he hook into your OBD2 port?

You will need to use Techstream to add the wireless remote to your truck's ECU. None of the standard Toyota "training" techniques work on our 4runner for some reason.
 
I suppose she could have done it wrong and maybe just the one step and not the other. I have my receipt so we'll see.
Do you no think the different guts to the remote matter?

If you bought the same key I used no. It should work.

It looks like it would. Linked below is the one I am talking about.

Also I assume the standard key (the one your post mentions) will NOT work to start push button versions (Limited).

I think both your assumptions there are correct! Techstream is the same software that your dealer uses when doing these types of tasks.

I am going to give this a try with a smart key fob. Wont happen until later this month and will post my results.

So after I got my 2014 le and I only had one key I had called around and found a locksmith who would do it for $225....after trying to meet with him(he is only in the area one day a week) we finally met up and I got it for the dealer price....

One of the random keys I bought on ebay 2-3 years ago had a 4 button remote as the guts. I finally just got around to adding it to my 4runner today. It programmed and works just fine. The 4th button doesn't do anything (trunk?) but the other 3 work as expected with no issues.
 
Nice Write Up!

About to do my key I just ordered tonight. My plan was to get the key setup before going to get it cut which should be fine I assume? Also I don't really understand the immobilizer part. The video the guy has a chip hes switching back and forth between his keys? My key doesn't have that? Do I need to follow that part? Thanks for any input, just trying to get clarification before I dive into this tonight.

Also sorry for reviving an old thread.
