How to find local offroad clubs and trails?

I'm new to the "organized" off-roading/overlanding. What is the best way to get in touch with other local enthusiasts to wheel with and find local trails to hit.
I am located in Upstate NY and the area seems pretty rich with overland built jeeps, land cruisers, and rovers

You are on one of those sites now.

People from all over the country frequent this forum. I'm not to far from you. Unfortunately, I'm in NYC. From what I have seen around here (NY/NJ), it isn't good, there are private clubs, paid clubs, and then there are the free trails, but you risk being shot or arrested.

There are tons of camping areas, and hiking/biking, but NY & NJ do not cater to 4x4/Off-Roading. Every time I been off-road, it's been in another state. [Ex: MD, VA, PA]. I been spending hours on google earth/maps trying to find trails that are close by, and I'm running into brick walls. Looking at Catskills, and the Adirondacks and nothing coming up. It's either private or state land. State/National Parks in NY & NJ don't offer 4x4, the only thing I found close was Pine Barrens, NJ, there is a nice state park there called Wharton State Forest. I hear the troopers harass the off-roaders all the time there, and use them to generate revenue for that area. Myself, I'm looking for off-the-grid trails, backcountry camping, etc. Not some over priced lodge with minimal trails.

Facebook has some of the most active offroading/overlanding groups from what I've seen. Check out northeast overlanders and ask around for other groups in NY there. I'm from western and don't ever remember there being much "offroading" opportunity other than mud bog type stuff so it might mean traveling to other states nearby.

I just bought a guide book for my area and hit the trails myself and/or with a close friend...

Personally I kinda try to avoid some of the groups and "organized" events. Sometimes it's great, sometimes you end up going with a bunch of people who are just a liability.

Even if you go with a group, it's good to have some maps or a book like that. I started with a lot of the green trails and started moving up. Some of this stuff I just do myself now because of familiarity and wanting to get away for a weekend.

If you go by yourself (or with others) make sure you take preps, sat phone / ham radio / GPS...
