How to fix loud windshield wipers? Vol. 06 T4R

So, this winter storm in socal finally put my wipers into good use and they're extremely loud.

Any tips on how to fix this?

Are they rubbing weird? My left wiper was vibrating on the bottom on each upstroke. I thought it was my wiper engine. I'd give the window a good cleaning to get any road grime off, and clean the blades with rubbing alcohol. If it still does it, maybe new blades? If the windshield is pitted a lot a new one could help. I got a new one with a $100 deductible with my insurance because a crack couldn't be fixed.

If you're talking about blade chattering on the initial wipe but not the return wipe, turn them around so the bend of the blade on the windshield is in the opposite direction.

On the drivers side I did the blade itself. On the other side, I just turned the whole arm around even though that means the pressure clip won't engage. Doesn't seem like it's in any danger of falling off.

From day 1 when I bought my 4Runner this was one of my gripes. I replaced the blades with Bosch units first, still made a bunch of chattering noise. Then those were replaced with another set that still made a bunch of noise. I typically don't use the wipers much in the rain, only for mist (one of the other gripes with the 4Runner, where is the mist function!!!!) so I just dealt with the loud wipers on occasion.

Fast forward to this last weekend after a snow storm. I have a slanted drive way so when the ice melted and slid off the roof of the truck it smashed one of the wipers off. Well time to replace them. Low and behold, finally, a set of quiet wipers. Picked up the Trico Neoforms on sale at Advanced and by far they are the quietest wipers I have found for the 4Runner.

Sorry, long story for a simple answer.

So.... its raining here in Dallas and this is one of my big gripes.. LOUD wipers.
Anyone else use the trico neoforms? That may be my solution.

To work and back is no big deal, however, if i go out of town and its raining i will go insane!

Wow, glad to see I'm not the only one with this. Its very annoying. Anyway, OEM wipers seem to be quiet but they skip and rub as well. Gonna try the trico neoforms (if I can find them).

get a piece of cigarette and soak it and wipe the brown stuff to the glass, that will help smoothen the glass and the wiping. don't use any glass cleaner or any chemicals.

I used to have this problem too. Thought it was the wipers, changed them out and the problem was still there. Turns out the glass was just covered in deposits. I used vinegar and a paper towel to apply it and let the vinegar soak/ dissolve the deposited gunk. Cleared it up nicely.

just wanted to report:

Putting up with windshield wiper chatter since forever, I finally ordered PIAA
"Super Silicone" wipers. Chatter is gone replaced by smooth, silient wipers. They are pricey, $22-24 each on Amazon.

It seems like when mine are noisy and I replace them with the cheaper ones they are quit for a little while but start making noise within a few months.

So this time I got Bosch Icons and they are so quiet you can't even hear them when wiping, you can only hear the motor. Have had them two weeks now and been through 2 big storms including one cold snow storm in Utah and they are still as quiet as the day I got them.

I hear mixed reviews on the icons. I heard nothing but praise for the PIAAs. I don't doubt the icons are good. I just wanted to try them and so far, I love them. OF course, I've only had them for a few days.................. I'll report back in the future with updates.

I bought Lexus ones from the Lexus dealership to put on mine. they look nice, plus i only need to replace the rubbers for $10 each instead of $20 per blade again. Common sense.

I bought my 2004 T4R back in November last year, the wiper blades were falling apart and mismatched, I got a pair of Bosh Icons and if I'm not looking at the windshield I wouldn't even know they were on, no noise what so ever and completely smooth wiping of the glass, and the windshield is the original glass and is pitted moderately but I can live with the pitting but not noisy and or chattering/skipping, streaking wipers!!

Tried the vinegar thing, claying it. Nothing worked. Before installation of the PIAA wipers, the windshield must be prepped (alcohol wet cloth provided). For a while I believed my wiper arm was slightly bent.

Our weather really beats up the rubber and blades.. from crazy tree sap to crazy ice. I just use the Michelin all weather/ice blades from Costco. $10/side and replace them often.
