How To: Headlight Bulb Conversion (H11 to H9 & 9005 to 9011)

For anyone here wanting good comparison images, I can only provide comparison images. Can’t testify for their quality at all. Taken at the same exposure and same location, and the stone wall is about 25 yards away. I’m quite impressed with the H9/9011 conversion myself.

Hey all, I did the H9 a few months ago and it was a massive difference. I did the 9011s tonight and I have to say, it’s nowhere near as impressive. I’m certain the brighter pic is the factory bulbs. Did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance.

If I can recall, the H9 is double the output while the 9011 is about a 33% increase. Hard to really the differences in the photo but the throw seems better in some parts. I did the 9011 upgrade and found the increase in output to be great in the dark mountain roads around Yosemite and Sequoia.

Take another photo from the same vantage point.

Change one bulb back to the OEM 9005 and see if you can tell the difference side by side.

excellent, I have tried both HIDs and LED replacements in my f250 without great results.

I am definitely doing the H9/9011 conversion in my 4Runner

I've read mixed feedback from users stating it didn't make a big difference when upgrading on 2014+ projectors versus the earlier models without the projectors.

I went from the standard H11 to drop-in HID. Then swapped out the HID for the H9 upgrade which I am very happy with. Won't be going back to HID.

I should mention that the H9 bulbs I chose to run with are the Philips 12361B1 made in Germany. Try to avoid the bulbs made in China.

edit: should also note that I tried LED drop-in bulbs and they were the worst addition I ever made to the 4Runner.

A guy on TW tested both the German made and Chinese made Philips H9s. There was no significant difference.

I really hate removing the bumper. I removed my Alpharex headlights since I will be doing lots of camping with snow for the next 3 months. Halogens melt snow and that's important when in the mountains. I will go ahead and take the new bulbs for a for spin when it gets dark and then aim them.

ive done this upgrade on other vehicles in the past and yes the lighting output is amazing but be prepared to replace these bulbs much more frequently.. the h9's will help a little better w/ melting snow off the headlamps but not too much more heat to damage your headlight housing

Luckily its a relatively, cheap and easy mod.

Had these installed for a couple days and they make a very noticeable improvement in brightness. Makes them pretty useable now. The brights are much better as well. All in all it’s a nice upgrade in brightness.

Yeah I was pretty surprised at the amount of light the high beams have now. Very nice upgrade.

I can't use them all the time, but its actually like turning on a spotlight. Lots of distance light which will be nice in the country and mountains.
