? How to install Airaid intake tube in 96 T4R 3.4L ?

I tried to install an Airaid intake tube in my 96 4Runner Ltd 4wd 3.4L today. It would not fit. Before ordering it, I called Airaid and asked them if the one they advertise for the 95 - 04 T4Rs really fits, since it is listed as the one for the 99 - 04 on the box. I was told "yes", it will fit the 96. It comes with a few connectors (barbed ones), and 3 threaded plugs. None of the 3 protruding connectors on the tube are threaded to accept the plugs. I have a photo of the stock setup, and the Airaid tube. Aside from not fitting easily (if at all), the packing slip is initialed and each item is checked off, like someone really took a look at this kit and decided that all of the necessary parts were accounted for. I plan to call Airaid on Monday and ask them to share the secret of the install for my T4R. At least while I had the stock setup off, I was able to clean my throttle body and MAF sensor, so it wasn't a total loss. We'll see how the return/refund goes. Anyone have the secret formula for installing this item so I can use it and not send it back? Thanks.

It looks pretty straight forward...remove the intake or the mid-pipe and swap in the Airraid tube, connect the hoses and you're done, and remove the EFI fues for 30mins.

Not nearly as simple as it looks. Nothing except the ends of the tube fit as they should. I just got done reading the 3rd Gen Buyer's Guide thread, and there is some good info on air intake mods there. I may use that thread to figure this out, but it will take my best thinking cap to get this one done, if it can be done with this Airaid tube at all.

Don't waste your time/money. It won't increase the performance or gas mileage. You do get an incredibly annoying drone that will drive you out of your cab, especially on long mountain climbs.

Back to your question. The install is pretty straight forward. What issues have you run into with the install.

Tego, are you being sarcastic? Or is this kind of like pizza - everyone has his/her own preferences? Joel's setup looks most like the new tube I bought and I can see some of the problems I am having from his photos. 1) they did not include a hose to connect the PCV to the tube; 2) the two lower connectors on the right, next to the MAF, are not threaded. But otherwise, it looks just like Joel's. I will certainly not toss the stock setup until I know that it works and I am not annoyed too much by the sound. Thanks for the advice guys. When I get it figured out and give it some time to decide what I think about it, I will report back. John

Are you saying it is more obnoxious with a S/C?

I hate the sound of the intake sucking in air, it drives me nuts, on the other hand I can't get enough of the supercharger whine

I find it with the intake the S/C whine is a lot louder...thats a plus! I did notice it revved more freely and my MPGs improved by a little.

I called Airaid today and explained the problems with the install. They acknowledged that the tube is defective if the three connectors are not threaded, and that my shipment did not include several items which were supposed to be in the box. They are sending a new one and a return shipping label. So, I'm still intent on installing it, and hope that I like the sound of all that clean fresh air sucking through that sparkly clean MAF sensor and throttle body. We shall see, and I will report. So far, Airaid's "no hassle guarantee" seems to be holding up.

Final Report on my Airaid adventure - Not a good one

Airair's customer service is very good. They sent me a new unit with threaded connecctors, and a free shipping label to return the first one. So, today, I go out and try to install the new unit. It does not fit. When I connect it to the MAF sensor, it does not line up with the throttle body. The angle is too large. I'm done with it now. I'm going to send it back and see if I can get a refund. I would have liked it to work so I could see if it has any benefit, but I have wasted enough time with it already, and it cost me about $110. It's good to know that it is working for some of us. Thanks for your help on this one. I still have to finish my rear shocks and springs and the tranny cooler. Then I begin the cargo storage/sleeping platform mod.

Did you specify year when you ordered? 96 & 97 have a different MAF than later years. It's a separate unit in the intake track. 98 (or maybe 99) and later have a smaller MAF.
