How to install Factory rear spoiler???

Hey guys,

Sorry for the new thread...I posted a question on a previous thread....and can't wait to get a response! lol!

I'm anxious to mount this spoiler I got from CJ80Cruiser, but want to know if there is anything else I need to mount this baby??

Do I just drill some holes and bolt it up? Are there any other parts I need to install it??

Any help would be greatly appreciated, but pictures would be great too!

Is there any black foam under the feet that go up against the tailgate? Mine has some but it's thin & hard to get a pic of.

There is some foam...but it is pretty thin....might use some 3M two way tape to act as the new foam...

Anybody know if there is a nut needed on the inside of the hatch??

I think that is all you need. I say plasti dip that bad boy before you put it on. I did mine last week and I love it. Oh and if you have some time and dont mind, can you tell me the measurements of those 4 screws that hold the spoiler on? I lost my factory ones like an idiot and got some new screws from the hardware store but they stick out and look stupid lol

Threaded Insert tool is your best friend man. This tool allows installation of threaded insert/nut especially in cases where only one side of the material, this time the rear hatch sheet metal is accesible. Try and rent one at the Home Depot.

Do I really need the threaded insert??? I can't just use some type of screw into the sheet metal with some locktite?

IIRC it requires a 6mm rivnut. My daughter while trying to destroy our garage door pulled one side of the spoiler loose from the hatch. I had to purchase a special tool to install the new rivnuts. I think the sheet metal on the hatch is way too thin to hold a fastner.

I decided to go the RIVNUT route as i am putting a roof rack on. this I think is a better way to make sure you dont rip out the metal screws.

now before I totally brag about RIVNUT. I am waiting for it to get warmer before I actually drill in my roof to install and see how they hold.

and yes I owuld get new 3M tape for a foot.

the bad is I did have to buy the tool. I ended up finding a place that sells a kit with the tool and 10 rivnuts for $25 I think

Alright, so I decided to take a cruise to my dad's place today and get the spoiler I recently bought for the rear hatch installed. I also changed over my Brand New Bosch plugs back over to NGK Duel Electrode plugs from the Dealership, as the Bosch plugs were causing the truck to take a long time to start.

We got started on the rear spoiler install and first ligned up the spoiler where we wanted it, then we used a small punch to mark the holes for the mounting points. Once everything was punched, we drilled out some small pilot holes, and then some bigger holes.

We decided to use some Rivets to mount the spoiler on the hatch, since we already had the rivets, and didn't want to go purchase a Rivnut tool. I also put some 3M Two way tape on the bottom of the mount feet, and then riveted them down to the hatch.

Basically, cost me around $70.00 for the spoiler and hardware. But it's an OEM piece I've been wanting for many years, that will hopefully keep the dust/snow off my rear window.

Nice there Fightman. I am glad the spoiler is working well for ya. I actually saw a third gen the other day around DC that had the spoiler painted to match the outside color (thundercloud). It looked good.

Notice any difference with the NGKs as opposed to the Boschs?

THanks man! I was thinking of painting it Evergreen Pearl....but figured I'd either paint it Black...or Graphite Pearl.....still on the fence with that...

The plugs seem to be helping the truck start better....but will know more today...

Looks like it came from the factory that way....I vote for graphite pearl just to be different. The evergreen would make it blend in too much, I think.

I just may do the Graphite Pearl....but will have to see... As for the spark plugs....the truck is still acting up....so I may clean the throttle body, IAC and MAF in the next few days as well.

Sucks to have spent another $26.00 for plugs....but oh well......... At least it's back within stock specs....
