My son is turning 16 next week-he wants something done to the 4runner- all terrain tires, tinting or something-mentioned a PA system what ever in the world is that!!
Said his is just too normal- a friend at the HS is apparently a so called mechanic.... any suggestions-he got it for Xmas but it's also his birthday present plus a few!!

imo, it all depends what he does with it. if he likes to off road then tires would be rad. tint is always good. and from what i understand a PA is the microphone that comes out a speaker. like cops have. which could be rather fun for a 16 year old. or rather dangerous. but thats if we are talking about the same type of PA. if its a present, and i were him, i would want tires more, cause thats the most expensive and if its being paid for as a present and i didnt have to work for all that money, thats what i would choose. haha :)

You can get a lift pretty cheap if your looking at doing tires anyway I would do that. Tinting, you can do that yourself for extremely cheap, or have the front two windows done for around 50-70 bucks by a pro. a PA can be fun but it can get you in trouble when your that age. Just remember if you give him a lift he is more likely to go try and tear up the mud and mess something up. I would do the lift route and tires and make him work some for you since your hooking him up-

When I was 16 I would've wanted the tires the most personally. It will make the 4runner "look cool" more than anything else.

You can get a leveling kit that only lifts the front for pretty cheap and put 265/70R17 AT tires on there and that would set it apart from 95% of the 4runners I see around bham and AL. That's one of the reasons I did it to mine, there are a ton of plain 4runners around

It really depends on what he wants to do with the truck. when I was in HS with my 4runner keeping it clean and fast was good for me. most of the kids in my class never washed their own cars so having a shiny truck was pretty cool

Something that sets it apart. Fog lights or something would probably be cool. I think for tires, you may as well get different wheels that that's costly. Lift is the same deal. Hopefully that mechanic friend has some decent experience already though....

thanks for the info- maybe I'll do the tires or fog lights
where do i get the fog lights installed-

The local Hyundai dealer

Or you could wrap them and install them with your son like a bonding experience. Plenty of write-ups on how to install basic aux.lights.

Bigger tires, tint the windows.

Do not get him a PA! I had one when I was 16 and I got in so much trouble with it. Just a bad idea lol

A brush guard with some fog lights would be cool, BFG all terrain tires, and tint.

why do you all want the windows tinted-I thought it was illegal? I think the rear ones are tinted
Where do i find a brush guard with fog lights? I am a single mom and have no idea about this car stuff?

It looks good, it keeps your stuff safe... People like tinted windows. Do you have any local offroad shops? Maybe a 4 wheel parts? You can easily order the stuff yourself but for what you want it would be easier to just take it to an Offroad shop and have do a turn key service for you.

35 percent is legal tint in ga. You can google your local tint laws pretty easily.

You can PM if you'd like, I don't mind helping out :)

Waag or westin makes some grill guards but be warned. They are damage multipliers meaning in the sad incedent if the truck was in a wreck the damage would be more than if it weren't there. As for tint go look up whats legal in your area.

It's an SR5 right?
I'd look at new head units for a nice audio / navigation upgrade or maybe take it in and have heated leather interior installed.

im 18! get the PA system for sure!!! and window tint! no highschooler wants people to see whats in his car, trust me i had a obsession with my runner when i got my license.. and now theres literally nothing stock left on the car :] ha! get the Coogpa PA system they used on pimp my ride, it has 80 pre set sounds from national anthems to animal noises it rocks! only downfall its a bit quiet. if you dont get the super expensive one.. . so i souped mine up the wattage on mine ;] or if you would like you could get him a spacer lift.. i wouldnt go all the way with new everything though

When I was in high school, I wanted to have a better stereo, but not sure what this current generation of kids likes. A good head unit is always a bonus for me! Plus I'm a fan of bass, as my 2 10" subs in the back would give that away!

I'll just say this, my brother-in-law who's about to turn 21 would take his dads truck out and do donuts in the dirt. Of course my father-in-law would of killed him if he knew he was doing this, but something to think about if you go your kiddo tires and a lift. Plus kids thinking they are invincible would probably think their truck would be invincible too and tend to get stuck more. Since they would think, I got the tires and lift, my truck should be able to do anything now!

Just my $0.02.

I'd say do the lights or tires. I'd also recommend doing the lights together, instead of just sending it off to some shop, but you're choice. If you do the tires, you guys could work something out where you get some cool 285s, then he does some work, etc. to earn the money for a spacer lift and some spidertrax.
Whatever you do, don't get him the PA - it's like putting strobe LEDs on your truck - fun to play with in your driveway, but just a terrible idea on the road :police:.
It's better the temptation not be there.
But if you don't want him offroading it, definitely just do lights. Tints and stereos works too, just not my thing.

yea they are for looks only.

if you want it to look cool and stand out go with some aggressive AT tires, maybe even a stock size MT if your willing to pay extra cash for less tread life, also maybe some black steel wheels if you can afford it. you can get some 17'' cragars for like 65 each.

if you decide to lift it or just put at's or mt's id suggest taking him offroad and showing him some ropes and how to be safe. my dad did that for me 2 years ago. especially since he has a 4wd. mine's only 2wd
