How to make an extra key?

hanya

Hi,

I just bought my 1999 LTD and I only got one remote and one key. I want to make an extra key incase I get locked out....

Questions:

1. How do I find out if my key has a transponder?

2. How do I make a copy of the orginal key with the transponder?

3. How do I know if the key I have is a master key ?

4. what happens if I use a regular (all metal) key that I made in a local hardware store?

Thanks,
Hany

i'm pretty sure your key doesn't have a transponder. i think toyota designates the master key as the one having the black end, instead of all an all metal key. you could go to your local dealership or hardware store to get a copy made. someone correct me if i'm wrong here...

You have a transponder key. It should be thick and fat. If the end of the key is black, that's one of the master keys. If the end is gray, then it's the valet key. When they were new, they came with 2 master keys, 1 valet key, and 2 keyless remotes. If you have the transponder key, you'll have to go to the dealership and it'll probably cost you $50-60 when it's all said and done with cutting the new key and having it programmed.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Grant,

Yes my key has a transponder, I called the dealer and found out. but they need something called "Key code number", do you guys know what that is?

thanks,
Hany

When you buy a new car, you get with the keys a little metal tag (much smaller than a doggy tag but same idea). That is the number they are talking about. If you do not have that, I do not know how else they can do it. You are better off not calling, but going down there.

There's no reason why they couldn't cut a key from your VIN number. Is the one key you have one of the original keys. I work for a Toyota dealer, so I know what you can and can't do. Let me know if you have one of the original keys. The chip in the key is not specific to the vehicle. It learns the code from the master key that you have.

Thank you all for your help!! I keep track of both threads and I got whole bunch of new info that I didn't know before.

Yes, I called the dealer and they agreed that if I bring the car down, they could make me a key for $$$.

I got one last questions though, there's a locksmith on ebay that makes copies of transpondered keys for much less if I send him the key code number. what do you guys think

Is is true that we should have 2 keyless remotes units when we got it new....I received only one keyless remote...

Thanks!

Same here.. Two remotes, etc... go back and ask the dealer to cough up another remote. Least they can do after you drop $30K!

new 4runners have 3 keys and 2 remote fobs.

2 black master keys, 1 grey valet key, and 2 remote fobs.

Thank You All,

I will go to the dealer and tell them what's up with my second keyless remote....they might hide it somewhere inside the dealer...
