How to make my 4runner sound stronger?

Hello, first off I'm new to this board, and I know pretty much nothing about cars, especially modding them, so I'm coming here for assistance.

I have a 1999 4runner SR5 4wd (V6) and I want to do some mods to it.

For my first objective, I want to make it sound stronger and meatier, like an American muscle car...I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions on what I should get, where to get it and how to install it? Keep in mind I don't have very deep pockets; so I'm not looking to spend an extravagant amount of money.

After that I just want to increase the overall performance....power/acceleration/speed/mileage? Any suggestions for that? Thanks guys!

Exhaust and cold air intake. Really the only worthwhile things you can do and don't cost that much. Do a search for the 99's. It won't ever sound or perform like a muscle car though.

Anyone got a better answer? What type of exhaust should I get and where can I get it? Can I have it installed for me? How much will it cost? My price range is probably around ~500

Magneflow has some of the nicer sounding mufflers w/ sounding like a ricer.

Intake and exhaust are the easiest ways to increase noise. Plus, they do give you slight gains in mpg and hp. If you're wanting deeper exhaust notes, go with a multi-chambered muffler. If you're just wanting an increase in sound volume, and don't care if it's lower or not, get a muffler with fewer chambers. Magnaflow or Flowmaster exhausts should be right in your price range.

Like Bill3508 said, it won't sound like an American Muscle car though. The motors on the cars I'm assuming you're referring to have 2 more cylinders and at least 2-3 more liters of displacement. The V6 in our T4R will never sound like a muscle car. At least in my opinion they won't.
