How to prevent converter theft

I found out the hard way, on the mean streets of Chicago, that 4Runners have high clearance and converters are $1100. So I replaced the first one that was stolen with a new one, not really having a plan to keep the second one from being stolen and then it too was gone. I put a $150 after market converter on there that has lasted a couple years with no trouble. I doubt I'll get another Toyota converter, but if i do, any suggestions on how to prevent it from being stolen?

Strap a clock to the bottom

Pretty much anything you do to keep it secure they will just cut threw, just like they are cutting through the pipes. Unless you weld so much metal onto the thing that it would take them a few hours and several blades to get through I think just figure out a way to deter the theft will be your best bet.

Actually, you could fab up a skid plate that would cover enough area to make it impossible to get too.

Are there no skid plates under the converter? I would think a skid plate screwed into place would at least hamper the thieves. The biggest enemy to any thief is time. The more time spent trying to steal something the better the chance of getting caught. You may want to see if a mechanic can fasten a some type of skid plate, or locking bolts.

I've said it before...if you do nothing else to protect your cat from being stolen, especially in an area where they are susceptible do this: Budbuilt Belly Plate...

Someone makes rock sliders with an extension that coveres the cat. I don't remember who, but someone makes them... good luck

Catalytic Converter, not torque converter. They are worth a lot of money.

No advise. Just wanted to say your not alone. They got my 93' T4R for converter and O2 sensor a few years back. They are bold T4R was parked next to marked Sherrifs Cruiser on the street in front of building. Led me to sell my 4Runner. When I bought my 99' I rented a space in a secure lot adjacent to my building.

I'm an idiot. I'm so used to just calling them cats. Who steals torque converters? Just take the car! Will these ecu throw a cel if they're run w/o a cat?
