How to Replace the Rear Bumper Face Plate

So I went ahead and ordered the rear bumper face plate (center part) that's bent on my 4Runner. How difficult is it to replace? Would y'all suggest doing it myself or taking it to a bodyshop to install?

Also, are there any additional bolts or brackets that I would need?

Unless you have NO mechanical intuition, there's not reason to take it to a shop. Once you pop the faded black plastic piece off of the top of the bumper it should be pretty clear how it all bolts together. In fact, I think taking that plastic piece off will be the hardest part, simply because you're going to feel like you're pulling it too hard and you're going to break it. That's how I felt, at least.

The only bolts/brackets you could/would need are already on the truck, you'll just need to re-use them.

You'll have to remove the side pieces first too. When I put mine back together, for that center section, I only put the bolts back on that go under that plastic piece. Didn't see any need to put the rest back in since those held solid enough and the other ones were totally rusted and some broke during removal.

It's not that bad, just lower the spare tire so you have more room to get to the tabs holding the plastic cover on as well as the other bolts on the Y-shaped brackets. I didn't remove my side pieces either. I did have to replace a couple rusty bolts I snapped though.

I've had eBay replacement bumpers on mine for almost 4 years and they look as good as the day I installed them. Mounting holes, etc. were all identical to OEM also. Installation is easy but at least for me it was time-consuming as a couple of the bolts were rusted up pretty good (only rust on the truck besides the rear bumper itself!) and I had to wedge a sawzall in there to get them off.

It's pretty easy, unless you are in the salt zone. Then you have to beak the bolts. There M8s, I think, so easy to break. The threads are mainly in the bumper, so you just throw them, out you don't need to drill them out.

Start by taking off the sides and the plastic piece. That pops odd by squezing the tabs from underneath. Then work from the tires to the rear. You can probably get the center off by itse;f, but it's gotta be a pain.

My bumpers have also held up well, and it's been six years. I got them from CertaFit. They have the brackets, too, if you need them.

sides don't need to come out. that's just more work. 8 or 10 bolts i think it is and it's out. it's not that heavy either. i've done plenty. drop the tire to take the plastic cover off. use a small pry bar or screw driver to squeeze the tabs. very easy job.

I replaced mine from E-bay back in 2011 & it hasn't rusted out yet & looks good.

I took the side pieces off to replace.

All righty then. eBay replacement it is. I do plan to hit the back of it with rust inhibitor/converter when installing for a little extra insurance.

Forgot to update this thread. I went ahead and installed the eBay rear bumper.

The previous damage had slightly misaligned the brackets on the truck. But after some pulling, everything lined up.

I ended up just buying a 6 foot roll of black vinyl and wrapping it. Hard to tell the difference versus the paint.
