how to safely remove steering wheel?

How do u safely remove the steering wheel in my 98' limited?I dont want to piss the airbag off.My steering wheel is pos leather and i want to get just a regular black non-leather one.Will that work?Thanks guys.

One thing, do you have a Hayne's book for your 4Runner? If you do, it might be in there. They do not cost a lot at pep boys.

The 4th Gen manual says to disconnect the Negative (-) battery terminal for at least 15 minutes prior to working in the area because the SRS has capacitors. I would think the same warning should apply to your 3rd Gen.

In my '99 FSM, the procedure is Key off, negative battery cable removed, then wait 90 seconds. This is repeated several times in several different places. I am guessing that the disable 90 seconds after key off feature was removed in the 4th gen....or maybe they found out it didn't work....
