How To: Speaker Door Install

Hey,

I was wondering how I would go about installing a 6.5" speaker in the door of my '88 T4R.

There was no speaker there before and I want to put in a a bracket or something.

Wanting to know if someone has done the same and was successful

i put in some Boston rx57 speakers in my doors...i'll post some pics. basically just cut a hole in the lower part of the door and a spot in the panel. i noticed that when the bass would hit at certain frequencies something would "buzz" real bad so i re-taped that moisture barrier and zip tied the factory wiring harness nice and secure.

So the part that the speaker is attached to is the door right? See I didn't think that would be stable enough since the speakers in the front/back are actually mounted to a metal frame.

heres some pics, the camera died and didnt save the last one with the panel pulled away. i drill like a 3/32" bit and used 1" long drywall screws...worked great.

ya it works good. and with the panel between the speaker and metal like that it seals it real good.

what about doors with pockets? I've got pockets in my 88, and so it doesn't look like there's any good spot on the panel (no flat areas big enough).

yo MT how do you have your tweeters in there
i have some and sometimes when i slam the door it falls out

well i originally had installed a MTX component system (mid-ranges, tweets, and a EQ) the tweeters pop into this housing that has a metal clip. screws go though the housing to the clip and "sandwich" it tight to the panel.
i've never had a tweet fall out, but little mesh cover popped out when someone slammed the door.

Also....
i didnt have to drill into the door itself for the tweeters, that spot behind the panel has a access hole for the window motor, so it doesnt push up on the metal, just that vapor barrier...

well, in my '95 i don't have pockets, but i still built a box out 1/2" particle board for better midbass. covered it with matching carpeting and screwed it to the door. this way if i ever sell the truck i'll just remove the box and there'll be no trace of a speaker or a hole.
In your case, simply remove the pocket, install speaker, re-install pocket back. It'll sound just fine even with pocket covering part of it.
you can even install a 6x9 in the doors.
if you are going to build a box then first screwed it to the door from the inside through the speaker opening and then install the speaker.
