How to wire halo as DRL?

I have an 01 on which I have disabled DRL but I have some retrofits with halos on the way. What do I need to tap to have the halo act as the oem DRL? I want them on until I turn on the headlights.

Well the oem drl operates the headlights at 50% then switches to 100% current when switched to 'headlights' from 'parking' lights. So I'm not sure you'll get the desired effect of drl on then off when switching to headlights. I'm not sure how to get that operation, perhaps one of the electrical wizards on here does?

Did you get the halos that blink in amber when turning or the solid color ones? :cowboy:?

With my retrofit I disabled my DRL's. Otherwise the HID's will always be on. I had the halos wired to the parking lights.

I have amber halos, not the switchbacks. I could easily wire them to a switched source to be on when the engine is running but I'd like them off when I turn the headlights on.

Get a 5-terminal relay and make these connections:

Terminal 85 - ground
Terminal 86
- If you want the halos to shut off with the parking lights or headlights on, tap the positive wire to either front corner light. It doesn't matter which corner light, whatever is easier for you to access.
- If you want the halos to stay on with the parking lights but shut off with the headlights on, tap the positive wire to either ballast. Like the corner lights, it doesn't matter what side.
Terminal 87a - halo positive
Terminal 30 - positive source that's "hot" with the ignition on, fuse the wire for safety

Thanks!

I've also come across something about tapping the wire that was cut to disable the factory DRL which is a grounding wire but since it's lower voltage, the halos wouldn't be full brightness. Does this sound correct and I need to use the relay method above?

Good question,it's probably a ground or full 12v, the low voltage stuff happens after that part circuit. I'd look it up right now but I'm heading to work so it'll have to wait until tomorrow morning.

Any luck figuring this out? I'm trying to figure out how to use my Halo's as DRL's also. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2000 limited where I disabled the factory DRL and use the halos in full amber as my DRL but turn them off when my low beam HID retrofit's turn on, I modified a TRS wiring harness with 2 extra relays to do this, I'll search for the wiring diagram and post in tis thread when I find it.

Not shown is that both power sources are fused, used an "add-a-fuse" in the under hood fuse box at the DRL fuse location, and added one for the relay contacts power source which is straight off of the battery.

Worth mentioning my truck is a 2000 Limited U.S. vehicle not Canadian

Basically I just have the 2 relay contacts in series so that the Halo's are on whenever the ignition is on and off with Low/High Beam HID's, when R1 coil fires the normally open contact closes turning on Halo, when R2 coil fires from headlamp low beam trigger the normally closed contact open turning off Halo.

That seems detailed but it is still quite a bit more complicated and with more places of possible failure vs. simple single OEM Toyota fog light switch wired to a BlueSea fuse box for the halos.

Yes the method I mentioned requires you to manually flip the halos off/on but I actually prefer this since in CA having amber running lights is illegal. Most cops don't care but I still like the option of turning them on independent of my driving lights which are manual because I have a 97. It is also a lot simpler to trace electrical ghosts this way.

Different years 3rd gen 4runners have different driving light electrical trigger systems, if my memory is correct some are (+) trigger and some are (-) trigger and some are DLR and others are not DLR. Tapping into the corner lights works sometimes in some instances. But messing with the system vs a separate circuit is just inviting trouble in the long run, say you are keeping the vehicle for many years.

If you are using the amber halos as daytime running lights, can you still use the amber halos as turn signals?

Is that possible? Amber for DRL's and turn signals and white halos turn on with low beams? That would be bad ass.

Thanks for the advice, planning to go this route. Just wondering what you do with terminal 87?

Thanks for the link Durk! I bought the Hella relay with the waterproof relay connector with 12" leads. I'll just cut off and insulate the #87.

Hello, I haven't get my custom headlights from hid retrofit kit yet but when i contacted them about getting all details of their custom headlamps, they were very specific on where to install each wire and what to do to do it right, you can contact them for that you need or you can google it, i know there is a guy with a video showing how to disable it, luck with that!

What Durk said. I have the relay wired to cut power off.

Another question, since I'll be getting power from my secondary fusebox wouldnt that result in constant power to my halo? Sounds like I'll need to setup an ignition relay to my secondary fusebox?
