Hub-centric wheels?

I'm looking at aftermarket wheels for my 01' 4-Runner. Should I get hub-centric or lug-centric wheels for my 3rd gen. rig? I'll be installing 16"x8" and 285-75-R16 tires. Will 4.5" backspacing be enough for no rubbing?

HUB CENTRIC. As far as back spacing goes I am not 100% but I believe the 4.5 back space is the way to go.

Thanks Pikeman! Now I have to decide which style to choose! My Runner is black, so I really think the **** Cepek black DC-1 wheels would look nice!
 
I have always thought that the 3rd gen T4rR has LUG CENTERED wheels untill
recently after I bought 17" Tundra wheels. I still have 1999 original rims. I measured the wheel bore diameter on both wheels and I've got the same number which is about 126mm. The hub diameter as measured was about the same 126mm that's why both original and Tundra wheels and the hub have a sliding fit meaning that we have a HUB centered design.

I am actually very surprised to learn about this because I have always been under the assumption that the 3rd generation has LUG centered wheels and you need a special (Haveka?) adapter for the proper balancing.
Can anyone comment on this, please?

I have come to the conclusion that the wheels are both hub and lug centric.....
Fits tight on hub and the lug holes are precision drilled....it will make your brain hurt.....:D
 
The OEM lug nut has actually a "good" clearance fit inside the wheel stud hole meaning that there is no way the wheel has a LUG centered design.
My head is spinning...

Mine seems fairly snug.....guess I'll have to measure it next time...

this is half correct.

factory toyota steel wheels are both hub-centric and lug-centric.
alloys are hub-centric.

easiest way to tell is to look at the lug nut. if it is tapered, and fits into a tapered spot in the wheel, that means it is lug-centric, because the wheel gets centered by the taper in the nut. BUT the hub also fits tight, and keeps the wheel centered on the hub, therefore it is also hub-centric.

the alloys are different. the lug nuts pass through the wheel, and hold it down with washers on the nut. the wheel is held on by the nut, but centered on the hub. hence, hub-centric.

some aftermarket wheels have the hole in the center that is bigger than the vehicle's hub, because it is made to fit many different cars. if these wheels were installed as-is they would vibrate like crazy. the wheels come with rings that press onto the vehicle's hub, basically enlarging it to fit the wheel perfectly, and making it a hub-centric fit.

pretty much any wheel you buy MUST be hub-centric to eliminate vibration. lug-centric or not depends on the wheel and what type of lug nuts it accepts.
 
So, why the need for the lug centric Hawkea adapter for the balancing then?:confused:

Most wheels are balanced with a cone that goes inside the center hole. The adapter has 6 lugs on it that line up with the 6 lugs on the wheel. it's just a more accurate way to balance the wheels with bigger center holes. This means that the attachment to the machine is lug-centric because the machine doesn't have a hub.

Seriously. I have the factory alloys that seem lug centric from what you just described. That and the fact that my vibration issues disappeared completely after I had a lug centric balance :confused:

The alloys should be hub-centric on the truck, but you have to balance them with the lug-centric adapter because the machine doesn't have a hub.

Did you actually know this or did you read through that TTORA thread? If the former, I am impressed. If the latter, I hope you ended up with a headache (because I did), and congrats on your concise rendering of the five pages of that beast of a thread.

...although it really should be "...doesn't have a hub or cone that fits Toyota alloy wheels..." At least I think that's right.

nah I've been working on and around cars for the better part of my life, quite literally...I've been building 9-second racecars since I was 12.

But yeah, the machine doesn't have a hub, technically. And there are cones that do fit the alloy wheels, but they're too big to center the wheel perfectly.

126mm? Are you sure? I thought the bore and hub are around 106mm. I keep gettng more confused the more I search.

Believe it or not, I have a '99 wheel and a caliper both sitting on my kitchen table. I can't get it all the way in there, but 106mm looks spot on to me.
