Awesome updates. After seeing your initial pictures of the rig....I honestly never thought it would get dirty or beat up at all. Glad you're using it.

Yeah, offroading is something new and fresh to me. The car scene is kinda boring me out... Slam cars, lift trucks!!!

That was an exceptional update to your thread, hungwin! I just got a chance to read through all of the posts. From your off roading pics it looks like it's time for a BudBuilt skid!

I love how you've set up your 4Runner. Quality parts throughout, and the whole thing looks super clean. I would expect nothing less from somebody with who owns a Supra like yours.

I'm going to plagiarize your shovel mount, thank you very much. I just need to get some mighty mounts. And the "miscellaneous storage container" is a great idea for keeping the smaller items in your emergency kit organized and in one place... I was taking notes on that one too. Thanks for taking the time to post the details.

No prob, glad that the posts can help out. Lord knows I've gained a ton of info here and on YT, your thread included! The Yakima Mighty Mount kit you want for the OEM cross bars is the 24H model, and it comes with four (4) mounts and hardware. I have twice now been able to walk into my neighborhood REI and pick them up, YMMV. As you can probably tell, the way I mounted my shovel makes the spacing look kinda goofy, so that's why I want go get another crossbar to put in front.

The storage container I swear by is made by Akro-Mils. Reasons:

• One front latch, no fumbling around with multiple
• Versatile compartmentalizing (say that 3X fast!)
• Relatively sturdy

I have others I use to hold my hardware, electrical connectors, and hose clamps. I actually use one to keep cutlery and knifes in my camp kitchen Pelican case. The model shown is the Large case:

Have you considered getting front d shackles? That is next on my list. Seeing your thoughts since you seems to be hitting the trails harder than me.


PS. I am picking up another MR2 next month, 1993 N/A "Steel Mist Grey" 75k...I don't think I will mod it. Maybe just update the tail lights like I did on my 92. Did you install your MR2 taillights? I remember it was a pain.

Yeah, trying to get out more often and get some more seat time off the tarmac.

I did consider getting front D-shackles and probably would have them now except I took a dive into the deep end and ordered a bumper, so I'll have recovery points in the front. I don't think we're gonna hit up any hardcore trails again before the bumper arrives, so I should be in good shape.

Yep, I did install my MR2 taillights and also rekeyed the lock cylinder myself. It wasn't that bad and the worst part IMO was pounding in the rear trunk panel to receive the backup lights. I thought about it at the time and I should have just taken the time to, but I'm very certain that could have been avoided if the backup lamps were replaced with an LED board. The whole reason that assembly is so deep is to accept the reverse lamp reflectors and bulbs.

The SMG sounds great - 75K is nothing and is very low mileage. Those cars still look great today and just need some footwork and wheels to keep it fresh.

I got in on the Shrockworks GB back in February and am waiting for my shipment notification... BudBuilt skids should be here this week, or they better be!!!

The Wet Okole GB was on TacomaWorld, and CBI has a subforum here and Nathan from CBI posts the monthly deals often.

Haha, I am sooo FAIL re: updating my build thread. I've been busy working on the rig and taking it to fun places!!!


I'll start the process with what I'm calling "T4Rmament" (think T4R-armament).

After the last wheeling trip to Potts Mountain where my power steering rack was almost taken out leaving some serious damage to try and repair on the trail, I plunked down the money for insurance: aka armor.

BudBuilt 3/16"-thick Front and Belly Pan Skid Plates - May 19-20, 2012
First off were some BudBuilt skids in Black Powdercoat. Nothing crazy, but beefy and protects most of the front underbelly of the beast. Installed pics below, after the gas tank skid.

Lil' Skip's Offroad Gas Tank Skid Mockup - June 6, 2012
The next step was to protect the coffin-style gas tank. While I probably could have spun my wheels and try to make one; a) it wouldn't have fit as tightly and b) wouldn't have been as well built as Lil' Skip's Offroad's gas tank skid. I'm glad I didn't rush into it and spent the time performing a test fit, because one (1) hole on the LH-side framerail had to be slightly enlargened to fit my truck. Otherwise the fit and quality is EXCELLENT. The packaging was also top notch - super impressed!!!

Here's how it fit with the BudBuilts in place:

The skid was slightly modded and then dropped off at the powdercoater. I decided to step out a bit and be different (read: me) and get a color other than black, so after looking at the various swatches, I decided to go with...


Shrockworks Winch Bumper Install - June 16, 2012
I got my Shrockworks bumper earlier in the week and began the process of removing the OEM bumper and bumper support.

Crating for the bumper, shipped via UPS Freight:

Here you can see my vinyl "eyebrows" - the effect was much lost after the bumper was installed.

Of course, the PIAAs came two (2) days after we had the bumper installed. At least they're easily installed from the wheelwell side.

Got the gas tank skid back from the coaters. AQUA b*tches!!!

Underside from the front looking back:

Pulled the front wheels off to adjust the ToyTec coilovers for the increased front weight. The brown isn't underbody rust, just mud.

Yes, I'm missing a bolt, but the PO (or technician) sheared it off in the frame and I broke a bolt-out trying to get that sucker out of the framerail.

Front end raised, PIAAs installed, and cleaned up (iPad pics):

I like to adjust my vehicles' ride heights with approximately 3/4-tank of gas, not topped off.

Yup, but I figured when it gets scratched, generally it'll be on the leading or trailing edges or the bottom, and touchup wouldn't be that visible. That being said, powder is a good basecoat to cover with paint, so if it came to it, I could roughen and spray bomb it...

It's at the the limit of everyday good-to-excellent daily-drivability. Any slower and it would be tough to accomplish quick merges, accelerations after lane changes from behind slower traffic, up significant grades, etc. But, it really depends on how you drive your car and drive around the power-to-weight when the weight has gone up.

Good eyes guys. I forgot to go into detail in my post, but yeah, those are tabs I asked to have welded on for limb risers. I changed delivery from residential to business and it basically took care of the tabs.

I haven't fabbed anything up, but by eyeball alone, they're probably not ideally located, but some stanchions or linkages may be straightforward solutions. I wanted something welded on and under the powdercoat should I go that route - the rest can be worked out.
