hurricane causing increase gas $

Here in Atlanta I bought gas a few days ago for $2.43 and today it was $3.29 and the line was 20 minutes long. Fox showed one gas station in Atlanta @ $5.89. I have never seen gas over $3 a gallon until today.

I think we are facing a shortage and will for awhile. This reminds me of the shortages from the 1970's. Not a pleasant experience, then and now.

Gas up about .30/gal. here overnight.
I think much of it is media caused.

I heard that we have plenty of oil, no shortage at all, just not enough refineries to make gasoline. We haven't built a new refinery in decades. No body wants one built in their backyard.
This shit needs to change.

Gas went .26 cents over night in southern Ct. However, the big problem is that a friend of mine who works for a large oil company said that no unleaded gas contracts were sold in NewYork City, which means that no gas is coming into port. I think that we have a self induced shortage in order to pump up prices.

I am officially concerned about gas prices!! I drove down Route 18 today and saw the price of premium hovering around $2.70-$2.89 in the morning. When I came home around 5 hours later on the same road, the prices rose to around $3.09-$3.20. The highest I saw in New Jersey was $3.47 for premium. I went to the local Sunoco and filled up for $2.89 a gallon. They are raising their prices tomorrow at 6:00 am when the boss comes in to over $3.00.

Get ready for the rest of the week folks. We aint at the end yet.

The story today in Yahoo was gasoline futures are at 2.96/gal. station prices are typically .65c+ higher than that. Wait till the panic starts.

Anyone have a bicycle? Does it have air in the tires?

Glad i got a v6 that gets 21.5mpg with my driving. Even with that, it is staying home very a long time unless there is no other solution for that trip.

On the way home from work I saw long lines at EVERY gas station. One gas station was charging 3.97 for 87 and there were STILL lines at the pumps. Around 10:00, I was driving to my parent's house, and I passed by 3 gas stations that were completely sold out of gas. This is just unreal, I never thought I'd see gas stations run completely out of gas.

Just got back from a friends house. Gas price in some Toronto gas stations jumps to 1.369 CDN per liter, this is 4.39 US per gallon.
WHAT IS GOING ON :confused:

i spent an hour trying to find somewhere that had gas here in wilmington, i live in wrightsville beach, yea thats a rather large island(NC) and the entire island is out of gas and said they wont get any until next week at least, prices have risen here50 cents today and are going to rise 50 more cents tonight leaving the only 2 gas stations tomorow with 1800 gallons of gas that is $3.89 a gallon :awais: :awais: :awais: :awais: i see a potential of long lines tomorow when this community wakes up to a rude awakening.

From my rudimentary understanding, gasoline is sold on the open market like grains or beef or a hot stock. When something like the hurricane happens, panick sets in and prices artificially rocket. So who is pocketing this money? We know crude oil is about $70/bbl, and a barrel (42 gal) yields about 28 gal of gasoline. So that's less than $2.50/gal. Now, the refinery sells it on the market to distributors (I think they pay the wholesale/futures price, which is like $2.60/gal). The distributor, in turn, takes his cut and sells it to service stations, who mark it up around 1-2 cents/gal. Included are 40-60 cents fed/state taxes. So it seems to me, the refinery owner who is buying the crude at $70/bbl and selling gas at the panick prices is pocketing the bulk of the money.

Not only that, but the price of crude is for delivery in the future, so the gas today was crude bought at, say, $50/bbl a couple of months ago, yet the refinery is making today's prices on gasoline. It's like when the gov't lowers interest rates, and banks take weeks lowering their rates and pocket the profits. OTOH, when rates increase, banks increase their rates practically instantly.

Last, even when everything was going alright, US refining capacity was strained. There hasn't been a new refinery built in 30 yrs. Why? No one wants a refinery in his backyard, EPA regs are strict, and why would you want to lower prices by increasing the gasoline supply and have to spend all that money to build that new refinery if you were an oil/gasoline company? I'm sure I've just touched the tip of the iceberg, as the entire oil to gas system is pretty complex.

wow i thought it was bad here, but now i feel lucky. this morning i filled up for 2.59 and then when i came home tonight it was 2.65 in like six hours, but i guess not bad at all here just out side of portland oregon.

You guys in Canada are suffering a bit more. It has always been more expensive there. I have been driving my family up to Mont Tremblant each winter to go skiing. We take I-87 Nord thru NY into Canada. I stop in Plattsburgh, NY which is 15 miles south of the border to fill up with gasoline because it

I paid 2.95 this morning for regular 87 octane... From what I hear, prices for 87 could hover above 3.10 per gal next week. Since the fed just opened up their reserves, this will help offset the supply of crude oil, but with nearly 1/3 of the refineries in North America down, I don't expect this to bounce back to those $2.00 per gallon days for some time... They are saying New Orleans will be 90% evacuated for the next 3-4 months.

At this point, there is nothing we can do except decrease the speed (highway speed) at which we drive to 60-65 and eliminate unnecessary trips. I am working from home 1-2 days per week so I can offset some of the gas price increases.

Obviously this came a lot sooner than expected.
Reporting from Houston, gas proces started soaring yesterday afternnon.

I filled up at $2.69, shortly thereafter it had gone up to $3.35....

I'm so gald my commute is only 7 miles one way......
But that means no more weekend trips :mad:

We topped $4 per gallon here in upstate SC early yesterday, and we expect it to rise today as well. I had to visit 5 different stations last night to find one that had any gas at all - some others apparently weren't as lucky as I'm starting to see lots of cars stranded on the side of the road that I can only assume are out of gas. My wife also saw cops having to direct traffic to/from some stations yesterday because the throng of cars was so large trying to get gas.

I also heard from someone in Georgia that some of the schools are out today because there is no gas to fill up the busses.

I'll be darned....I thought it was supply and demand.

I wonder what other conspiracies I'm missing. (No, please don't tell me.)

Really? There has been no increase in demand, nor decrease in supply one day after the hurricane hit. Not yet anyway. This is short term profiteering, no better than the looters down south. Just a fact... not a conspiracy theory.

If anyone want to fill up in Ontario, here some information which I've got from the guy in gas business. Sunoco got a deal and buying gas with 10c discount compare to PetroCanada, Shell and Esso. This means that Sunoco will probably have cheaper gas at gas stations. Last night PetroCanada/Shell/Esso - 1.369, Sunoco - 1.13

Yeah from what I understand they will be investigating those stations for price gouging. That sort of thing is just unnacceptable.

To follow up on my post yesterday, we didn't run into a total gas shortage. But it almost became a self fulfilling prophecy, as I was afraid it would be. Several county commisioners announced that we would run out of gas for a few weeks, so guess what happened then? Everyone ran out and filled every tank they had. And suprise suprise, some places ran out of gas. Our governor finally announced that those statements were false and we were not running out of gas, so everyone finally settled down. In my opinion, those commisioners who yelled "fire" or their sources should be investigated too.

Regular = $ 2.79 to $ 3.19
Middle = $ 2.89 to $ 3.29
Premium = $ 2.99 to $ 3.39

Long lines for the cheap stuff and no lines for the more expensive stuff; here in central New Jersey.
