I think there are definitely changes in our society that are leading to more violence. After all, we've had a 2nd Amendement for 220 years and mass shootngs have gone crazy the last 10 years. Trying to see where you're coming from. Is it the "if he feels good, do it society" you mention? As the father of a gay man I'll repeat a what he said when someone asked him when he "chose" to be gay: "why the hell would I chose to be punched and spit on in the school hallways? The whole point of violence in movies and video games influencing people's actions may not be a given as a whole, but it definitely sways people's thoughts over time, and can lead to action in those who are already susceptible to following the crowd. There can be no question that violent crime has risen on a similar curve to the rise in graphic violence in "entertainment"

Sorry BUCKNUTBOB .... but violent crime in the UNITED STATES is down or same as it was 10 years ago. In fact we are hovering around 1960s levels of crime.

According to FBI crime statistics the United States is now less violent and still trending downward despite the existence of Call of Duty and Dexter.

My point is that we (society) are drifting away from right and wrong. Gun control wont stop the violence. We need to take control of it at home.

Regardless of a persons life style I take each person for the person they are. I may not agree with their lifestyle but I dont hate them for it.

We all have the right to live our lives as free individuals, I served to defend that right. When my actions begin to impact anothers rights, my rights stop.

Violent crime is a pretty broad category. There'a a big difference between mugging someone and killing a bunch of people while dressed up like your favorite video game or movie villain. This wasn't happening 25 years ago! What's changed? Your guess is as good as mine. It's a complex problem, and pretending that gun laws, or even banning video games will solve it is naive.....that was my original point.

Just had this exact conversation this morning with my parents after some cousinly ribbing last night turned into a 10:30 FACEBOOK MESSAGE from my aunt saying how disappointed she was in me and that her children are special and incredible people and how much respect she had lost for me. :wow2:

She also threatened to talk to my mother about how I was raised and what is appropriate. I'm 27 years old....

Unfortunately, this is now all too common of an occurance.

I have been working as a college lacrosse coach and recruiter for the last three years, and we have received phone calls from parents about something we did or said on the practice field. Or that little Johnny isn't getting the playing time they deserve. Why does he "deserve" anything? We make our guys EARN PT and EARN our respect, something that they have never had to do before in their lives. They don't know how to lose, or sit on the bench, because everyone plays and everyone gets a trophy.

The worst part is, the majority of these conversations have come after some big wins for our program.

This generation of young teens are a bunch of bona-fide pussies. They don't know how to deal with loss, conflict, or how to work for their benefits, because it was always given to them. They don't know how to approach conflict with adults because they have the power of a computer and internet to send an email (or FB message) and it's all handled without any face-to-face interaction. Or by their parents.

I have dozens of stories from my time working in my local high school and from coaching.

It's pathetic. It's sickening. And it's sad. The words "NO" and "work" have escaped from this generation's vocabulary.


I was spanked, told no, and when I got a bad grade, it was my fault. And I'm not "mentally scarred" from my parents raising me this way.

First off, I'm a firm believer that FB rots your brain and makes (anyone/everyone) more stupid for having it (no offense).

As if going soft on our kids isn't bad enough, now these kids have developed the greatest sense of entitlement ever because they feel like they have a voice and need to be heard. Outlets like FB and twitter con them into believing that they have a right to be heard and their opinion is important.

I value freedom of speech, but these kids need to learn just because someone online agrees with you doesn't make you right. Until you are old enough to vote on political issues or own your own house or your own business, you opinion is just that - and it doesn't mean much of anything.

When I was growing up, I'd get in trouble and complain that it wasn't fair. My parents looked me right in the eye and said, "life isn't fair." Now, if a kid says that to their parents, it opens up a negotiation. Parents need to put their foot down and take charge of their houses and remember that they are supposed to be the one in charge!

A lot of you seem to feel that it's a "pass the blame" society in which no one wants to take responsibility? Seems a lot of you also feel that OTHER parents are doing a terrible job of raising their kids and they're the problem. Kind if ironic.

I also see a lot of posts saying that people today are being selfish and entitled and thinking their opinion (their right) matters. Also kind of ironic when you are arguing an anti gun control stance.
