I wish I could "like" this two times!
Anything in excess is bad for you. Okay, kids and adults alike both use facebook. I am not a huge fan of facebook but it's a socializing tool. It's up to the parents to monitor it for themselves and their kids.
I think Thai hit the nail on the head. Our society has turned into a "let's blame someone else" type of society. Perfect example: Let's sue the homeowners because I hurt myself during a home invasion, let's sue McDonalds because I spilled hot coffee on myself, let's ban certain things because a select few individuals like to do bad things with them. We cannot blame the person doing the dumb stuff, let's blame the tool that they used to do it.
In my mind, people that complain about guns or violence are a part of the problem. If you aren't willing to get off your duff and do something about it then you shouldn't be complaining. Too many people give power to the government by expecting the government to fix their problems for them. It's part of our WEAK and soft society.
Damn, shoulda voted for Obama then!

This is completely incorrect. Homosexuality has been part of society since there was a definition of "society..." It's never been "wrong;" just more or less common/accepted.
And there's a HUGE difference in sex between two consenting adults and sexually-assaulting a child. That's like a parent telling a kid that if he tries pot one time, he'll end up hooked on heroin and will die of an overdose.
You may have "strong feelings" on the subject, but you really need to educate yourself a bit more.

My point is Hollywood are hypocrites by calling for an end to violence. It would be like pornstars calling for an end to promiscuity.

+1. The DVD (and the video tape before it) have been the nation's babysitter ever since VHS killed Betamax and a VCR became as common in the house as a TV. Any home which has small children and has more "kid" videos than a Blockbuster store has a parenting problem, IMO.

I can agree with Hollywood wanting to end violence to an extent. Just because Hollywood produced violent movies doesn't mean that they condone violent acts in real life. There is a difference between an act for a movie and a real life event. Shakespeare wrote a handful of violent plays, has anyone blamed him for violence during his time? As adults, we have sex and yet we still tell kids not to have sex. Heck, we educate them about it in order to help them make smart decisions about it. How is violence any different?
Bottom line: The best we can do is educate everyone and try to get people to be proactive. There has always been violence since the beginning of man kind. There will always be violent and sick people, making more laws will not get rid of them. I think us as a society need to be able to identify signs of an aggressive act before it happens. At that point you can be proactive instead of reactive.

ah, so by that "logic" it was "right" that it was common for people to die from simple infections 100 years ago—prior to the discovery of penicillin? it was "right" that women could not vote? racial segregation was "right"??

those rose-colored lenses through which you choose to view history... i suggest you swap them out for a stronger, more modern prescription. aptly, they call them progressives.

There were no doubt mistakes in the past. But there are also lessons to be learned from our elders. Thinking you are so much wiser than those who came before you and gave you the freedoms and luxuries you enjoy now is what I aptly call arrogant.

but know what the real mistake is, bud? invoking the "freedoms [we] were given" while arguing to deny fellow citizens those same freedoms. if your head doesn't hurt from the cognitive dissonance of that, then you're not thinking hard enough. or at all.
i never said that the past was all wrong, that our elders don't have valuable lessons to offer, or that i am any "wiser" than anyone else. wisdom, in fact, has little to nothing to do with it. it's simple, common sense: conflating "what was" with "what's right" is ignorant.

Here is a question, why are violent crimes so sensationalized in the mainstream media right now? These things happen everyday in every state, in every country and in every demographic but never makes the news. Why is everyone so suddenly concerned?
