I have a 1995 toyota 4runner with 105,000 miles
yesterday I started up at lunch and got a lot of steam
in the exhaust , is this a head gasket or worse?

I know the head gasket recall was done?

any ideas

it may be your headgasket, and if you are unsure if the recall was done, swing by any toyota dealership with a service department with your VIN number.. the recall consisted of a new gasket and a new cooling system: which really was only a new fan and fan clutch. It seems unlikely that the gasket would go again after the recall and with only 105K. My 93 is still going strong at 230K with the recall done at 108K.

Is there anything else going on with it?
 
The head gaskets can go again for many reasons, check your oil for coolent in it/ are you loosing coolent also.

Lose of power/temp gauge not reading right?

Call your local stealership and give them the VIN, if they refuse the recall call the Toyota Regional Customer Service office for your region of the USA and they will give your stealership 48 hours to comply and a free rental vehicle.

I did some research with toyota
and my 4runner was never on the recall list

local shop quoted $500-$800 depending on any damage to the
heads


this seems like such an issue that toyota should back
this up. God knows this is a major issue with 4runners
 
I found prolly the scaryist thing today. Oil in my coolant, so My head gasket is gone. How long can i drive it like this and how hard is it to replace myself? By the way my runner isnt on the recall list, i checked today, but the good news is the steering recall is being done next thursday

The steering recall is the least of your problems......:(

Don't drive it, the more you drive it the more damage you will do.

You can replace them yourself but it depends on your wrenching skills.

The guy at the shop told me that
he has a guy at the shop that knows toyota 4runners
and that once the head gasket goes the block
is probably bad so know they want me to buy a
remanufactured engine.....I think it might be worth
it because who knows about the other head gasket
and it has a few oil leaks

what do you guys think
 
What Steering recall are you talking about? I thought that was newer 4runners. Is there a recall on 95 4runners? How can I look mine up?
 
Its the steering link, its at the end of the steering box I believe. Includes replacement and alignment. Call your local stealershp and have them run the VIN.


My trucks at yota rays for now, hes gonna diagnose it to be sure, but the way it sounds so far, with me being broke and my parents refusing to spend too much money on it, I may still end up doing it myself. FSM anyone? Toyota can't get me one

Thats a easy thing to say" pay me to put a re/man engine in it". What does he want to do that?
The damage depends on if the block is cracked or the heads are warped, but that is anyones guess including your guy at the shop.

You won't know untill you tear it down.

I don't know your wrenching skills or how much money you have but good luck and keep us updated.:)

Well now the guy at the shop says everything looks OK
so he is replacing both head gaskets (My Idea) and installing an engine block heater while he is doing the work

it is cold here in northern ID
-4 this morning

gasket failed last cylinder against firewall,, Seems
common... Toyota should do something!!!!!

yup #6 I don't know why your Runner was not on the list to be done under the recall.

It was a bad gasket design/material not the engine.

the owner of the local shop that did the work
showed me why the gasket failed. It was never put on right at the factory. the gasket was actually rolled under at the piston hole. He said it was miracle it lasted this long. so maybe this is the issue toyota is hiding!

imagine that, when i took my truck in for diagnosis it was number 6 plug that was wet. Probably gonna drop a reman engine in it
