I bought my '07 SE about 6 months ago and couldn't figure out what carfax was saying by "SR5/Sport Edition" so I emailed them. The gist of the reply was that the VIN doesn't actually differentiate between the two models. You have to look at the vehicle to determine which is which.

Would it be a possibility to sell this one and get what you actually want (A bonafide SPORT model)? how much ($) are you willing to loose?
Even if you keep it, you have a fine SUV and its practically bulletproof. Got a forum here full of helpful people in case you need some help figuring "stuff" out. When I got my Limited, I was kinda pissed it didn't have NAV, V8 and other stuff, but as time went by, I fell in love with my truck. Corny sentence, I know.
But I did end up getting a NAV :thumb3:

:iagree: Where people may be getting confused with the Carfax report is because they're not taking the critical "/" into account. From a English gramatics standpoint using a back-slash designates you will have ONLY one of two choices....NOT both or some conbonation thereof. In other words the designation "SR5 / Sport Edition" means you can have EITHER a SR5 model, OR a Sport Edition. The dealer in this case specifically told you it was SE when they could have, and should have, known it was an SR5.
I can't give you legal advice, I can tell you it's possible you have a potential legal case against the dealer for misrepresentation. That is IF you can prove a couple of things. Firstly you must be damaged i.e. the price you paid would reflect a Sport Model, but you were titled into a cheaper SR5 model. Therefore the dealer overcharged you via misrepresenting what you were buying. Secondly it will be critical you prove you were specifically told you were buying a Sport Model (possibly it uses that phrase on your paperwork somewhere?).
The dealer, of course, is going to defend themselves with "Caveat Emptor" (let the buyer beware), and swear they merely passed on the the information they were provided by Carfax / Toyota / auction house / etc. Your response would be that you've never owned this particular model of vehicle and had to rely on the dealer's expertice in automobiles to give you accurate information.

The reason being is Toyota doesn't distinguish the SR5 and Sport Edition through the VIN. So by looking at just the VIN, you can't tell if it's a SR5 or SE. The Limited has a different digital in the VIN to indicate it as a Limited.
Enjoy the 4Runner. The 4th gen 4Runner in the base trim, SR5, is far from a stripped down model.

You're responding to a topic that's 14 years old, also if you had read the topic you would know that several times the VIN was decoded!
