I despise Jeeps

Ever since owning my T4R, I've slowly started despising Jeeps and Jeep owners. I hate their snotty little attitudes about their vehicles and the supposed superiority of the SUV. I understand that there's a lot more aftermarket stuff for them, but come on. Weak sauce. (And I'm not just talking about Rubicon ppl).

That being said, I'll probably buy my dad's old 87 wrangler from him for $100, just for fun.

Before I got my permit, I learned how to drive in an 04 jeep cheroke, offroading. Had at least 10 hours of offroading before I ever touched the pavement. Haha

Although I would never EVER buy one over a 4runner, I don't think they are half bad. The newer ones look like toasters though. Not sure why they went with the "box on wheels" look like the Scions, and the Mercedes SUV.

I definitely see your point about their attitudes though. They don't know sh*t about actual 4X4 ratings of SUV's and automatically assume that a jeep would own anything, when in reality, the best are 4runners, FJ Cruisers, Landcruisers, etc.... All toyota by the way......coincidence?

It's all because of how Jeep markets it's vehicles to be so "hardcore." The suckers who buy them can't help it, they just believe what they hear on tv. :biggrin2: There are a few threads on here about jeeps towing out 4runners though. Sad days indeed.

I agree with you all on all the Jeeps, except the Jeep Wrangler line. The Rubicon SWB is a force off-road...it is the only vehicle that i would rate higher than my G-wagen off-road other than the now-discountinued Hummer H1.

The other Jeeps are "paper tigers."

01 was the last year of the Cherokee (XJ)... which was also the last decent Jeep other than the current Wrangler/Rubicon whatever the hell its called.

I had two Jeep Cherokees (XJ) over 17 years, and they're quite capable off road, even stock. The main advantage I saw was the light weight (1000 lbs less than a 4th gen?) and the potent 4.0L straight six (similar power).

That said, they're prone to vibrations and shimmys at freeway speeds after the first 150k miles, even with continuous proper maintenence.

I chased a vibration for 60k miles and finally sold it to a friend, who still runs it offroad and commutes on a regular basis.

I bought the 4runner to replace the jeep, and the main things I miss are the acceleration, metal bumpers (plastic is just lame), and the turning radius.

For the 2007 T4R V8 4x4, I love the nav (but the Jeep's stereo ?Infiniti? sounded better stock), the dual climate control, and the absence of roadnoise/vibration on the freeway.

Was the jeep "better" than the Runner? Not sure... I was used to the Jeep and could put it in some mighty tight places with confidence. But a recent outing with my new runner proved to be surprising, with the runner holding it's own in every situation I was willing to throw at it.

Which is better? Loafers or Work Boots?

I'll let you decide which is which...

:D

Hmmm...well, I must be a double agent...cause I own both a '00 XJ cherokee (stock, mostly) and '05 4runner.

I have taken both offroad...nothing heavy...maybe considered medium.

I have to say I like both very much...each has its advantages. But to be honest, the XJ is easier to offroad because it is lighter, smaller and does have better outward visibility (no, not because of the hood scoupe). Plus, being a slight older vehicle and simpler design, the XJ is definitely easier to do maintenance.

You couldn't give me one of the newer jeeps...well you could, but I'd trade it in for another toyota or another XJ.

Just FYI, the XJ was't an American design...I believe it was co-designed by Renault when they owned AMC/Jeep.

Also the Jeep commander is being discontinued soon , Thai I'm sure knows what year I'm not to sure.

The Rubicon is pretty fricken cool

My buddy at work swore his rubicon with his straight 6 made more torque than the v6 runner. Not, and he tried to toy around at a stop light and got his arse handed to him. Yeah i am sure he would tear me up off road, but my rig is mild for now.

Must not be a jeep cheroke then, because he bought it after 01 I believe. I could be wrong about the date though. Now that I think about it, he may have had it that long. Not sure.

Haha. Yeah jeeps are definitely not as smooth. Pretty jerky compared to the 4runner.

I love pulling out in front of people like that too. When you first accelerate they think they have a chance because they are floored while you are at about 3,000 rpm. Then when you kick in that last jerk of acceleration at about 4,500 rpm they are gone. Haha.

I just stepped into my 07 SE V6 last month (well, the end of Oct.). I've been through three Jeep Grand Cherokee's over the past 6 years with the exception of a Subaru STi in between the second and third. The first Jeep GC was solid being a 98 Laredo SE with the I6, and I'd probably still be running around in it except that it was a turd on the highway. That led me to my 98 5.9 Limited which was a rocket and a pretty solid offroader out the door. Got rid of it when the motor had various failure issues for no reason. The third GC that I had was an 02 Limited that I bought 3 years ago in Oct. '04. It was the best one of the three as far as balance between power, interior, and highway driveability. However, it ended up being a money pit for me (even though I did all my own work) whether it was numerous starters, total A/C system replacement (blend doors, compressor, evap & heater cores, etc.) twice. Tranny totally rebuilt earlier this year (Torque Convertor solenoid failure)...list goes on and on. Then one day it left me stranded at a convenience store on my way to work so I said screw it and turned it in. I knew that I had to get a new dependable vehicle and Toyota was the first thing that came to mind for me.

I had owned an '88 Land Cruiser FJ62 for about 12 years and that thing never gave me a lick of trouble and I beat the piss out of it. The 4Runner being the closet substitute for the GC ended up being my pick. So far I love the ride and overall comfort of it. The V6 has comparable power and pickup compared to the GC's V8, the steering and suspension are solid...I could go on and on. Sure I'm missing some features that the Jeep had, but those bells and whistles it had probably weren't working in the end for me anyways (ie the heated seats were shot, dimming outside mirror no longer worked...).

I must admit I briefly thought about getting another one either new or almost new. But I just couldn't see myself going through all of the headaches again. In all honesty, I'm probably done with American cars for a long time.

I have to agree with Mike07--my previous ride was a 01 Jeep GC Laredo. At the time, it was the best 4-wheel drive I'd ever owned (I've been through just about every american-made SUV there is). However, after owning my T4R, there's no way I'd go back to the jeep. The toy is much better both on AND off road. Now, I'm trying to decide what my next vehicle will be. I really would like to buy something different, but I can't imagine throwing money away on a "lesser" vehicle. For now, I'm keeping the runner.:)

When I was looking to buy my 4runner, I asked my dad what he thought of Jeep products - he said his friend had three of them in his driveway. Turns out he needed three cars to make sure he had ONE that ran out of the three.

Now I had a 96 Wrangler that never gave me a problem (save for a fuse) in 5 years. I definately had the 'tude as a Jeep owner - even more so when I had my '78 CJ7.

I gotta say - give me a 4Runner any day over the Jeeps. They sold out quality getting bought by Chrysler. Harsh but true. The 4Runner is tougher than any Jeep out there.

I have an 02 TJ wrangler and I love it. It is totally different than the 4runner. The jeep is the fun car. No top, no doors, offroad tires, bumpy ride. The 4runner is like a luxury car to me, smooth, quiet, great acceleration. I love them both, and would have a hard time choosing which one i like best. I hate the new JK wranglers though. I have not had any problems at all with my Jeep in the two years I have owned it. The only thing I don't like is that I broke the antenna twice now offroading and currently don't have one. For an off road vehicle they need to put that antenna in a better place or make it flexible.

I thought about a Jeep GC in 04 , so I rented one , I can't remember which 4wd system it was called . It had a 2wd , 4wd auto , 4wd hi lock , neutral & 4wd lo lock.

I beat the hell out of it , off roaded the hell out of it , I like the in line 6 cyl though. It was great on fuel , and I had it so covered in mud it wasn't funny .

I'm not sure what year the new style came out in the GC , but I would like to drive one . As far as quality goes I wonder how the new GC's are rated . I see they have some small 2" lifts out for them , but never researched them.

My friend has had an older GC ( now has an GM Equinox) and she just loves my 4R and its ability off road and on , She is my winter storm wheeling buddy. She said why would you ever want to get rid of this truck ( when I was looking at other crap).

Falls, you lifted your T4R yet? I think you're the only other person on this forum who has done as much research as me and has spent so long pondering it. I'd love for you to weigh in on my thread/poll about CF 2/1 CF 3/2 and DS 2.5

LOL... I don't think Falls is ever going to install his spacer lift! I predict it will be up for sale within a couple of months, because by then he'll be driving a Tahoe and will have no use for 4Runner parts!
