I found something good today, and backed out of something good. I found on 04 Land Rover Discovery II SE a few days ago with with 119k miles on it for $11k. Today I can across another Land Rover Discovery II SE with 81k miles on it for $9k. Well, I'm buying it on Saturday.

Now to the point that something has to go. On the chopping block is my 01 4runner or my 03 F-150. My wife gave me to go ahead to buy the Rover. Then she handed me the ultimatum of either selling my 4runner or F-150. It literally took me less then a second to say my F-150. So, the F-150 is getting sold for this beauty.

Are you aware of how much parts cost for those things? They are all 100% imported and (as it was explained to me by an owner) way more expensive then Japanese parts and usually more complicated for no clear beneficial reason.

An example of this is their design of having an expensive (to build/replace) fiber optic cable network behind the dash for lighting up all the dozens dash buttons when simple bulbs would have done the trick for much less design/repair $$$.

Nice looking Disco but I do not have the $$$$$ to own one. I once went to a dealer to look at them and the manager strait up told me he can in good faith take a young Marines money while he was on active duty because of the cost. I took the hint and kept the Stang. I do love them and they are cool but it is just not in my pocket book right now, many be one day after I own all the other cool car I want too...... Back to topic, land and range rovers are NOTHING but trouble.

Ill give you 2 quick stories....

1) my mom had one as a dd. Loved it, but it never ceased needing to go to the shop and expensive bills. Got rid of it.

2) my wife's friend was on the way to our place last week. She calls and says she's late, and ran out of oil... I assume she means gas and write it off as a chick typo. I talk to her when she arrives... She literally means out of engine oil. Ends up it's a range rover and has a nasty leak, her brother fills it up every few weeks. God knows why they don't get it fixed, probably a repeat issue from how much crap I've seen with that brand.

You are making a $9K mistake on that Land Stroller. I know 2 people with them and they both claim that it was the worst vehicle mistake they've ever made. The parts and maintenance costs are ricockulous on those POS's. I'd keep that F150. Sometimes you gotta put your lady in her place and let her know it's a bad....BAAAD decision. She's just gonna get upset every time something comes up and the money you spend fixing it ain't gonna brighten her mood. Better to have her mad at you and save $9K than have her mad and waste $9K.

How about a used... 4Runner? If the price point is the issue then do what the rest say and save your money. My uncle has 2! of those vehicles. One is a range and one is a land. They are stupid expensive to fix, and he is not hurting. Like... thousands of dollars. I think he said he had to get the sunroof fixed and it was around $2000. Kinda need that closed for stuff like rain and snow.

My truck's worth more than her Jeep is. Plus, I don't really want my truck anymore and already planned on selling it.

You don't buy an old Land Rover and expect it to be cheap to maintain. However they are fantastic vehicles when they up to date in maintenance. I would rather have the Land Rover over the F150. They are just more interesting. Don't expect the 4Runner forum to say positive things about Land Rover's.

IMO, I would not get the Discovery II unless it was a TD5 diesel which was never sold stateside and is an expensive swap otherwise. That 2004 has the 4.6 Rover V8 if I'm not mistaken. Those things eat through headgaskets quicker than the 3VZE and often suffer from slipped cylinder liners if they have not been maintained properly. I would go up one model year and get the Disco III aka LR3. They are more reliable than the DII's. I have not had any breakdowns in my experience with the DIII. If I had to deal with the Rover V8, I would go for a Disco I instead. They look very similar but have less electronic nonsense to go wrong. Much simpler too. The 4.0 is has less issues than the 4.6 but still watch out for the cooling system since they still like to blow headgaskets. Even better is that Range Rover you just posted. Assuming it ends up being well-kept I would go for it. It's a classic Range Rover!!!

The issue I'm seeing with this is the current owner said it hasn't seen a road in 5 years. They trailer it when they want to take it somewhere. I guess this could be a good or bad thing. I might have lower miles, but it also might not be road worthy.

*Edit* Speedo doesn't work, no sway bars, some of the lights aren't working, and a 186K on it (but the speedo hasn't worked for years). Seems like a lot of work before I could even drive it on the road.

Well there you go. I would avoid that. Those issues combined with the wear from being used strictly for the trail sounds like a potential nightmare. Keep looking for a cleaner 1st Gen Range Rover.
