The more I look, the more I find things I want. I just found a 92 Land Cruiser with 86k miles on it for $11k. About 10 miles from me too.
I know a few Land Rover Tech's from my own consumer car repair days. I'll just say they are never hurting for work.
They work on Land Rover products every day. They refuse to own a Land Rover product themselves.
I understand this completely. If I were still working on consumer cars for a living, the last thing I would want to do is have to work on my own junk for free, just to be able to get around.

Just last year one of the guys in our hunting party bought a similar gen rover for crawling in the woods (and saving the paint on his brand new LOADED LTZ Tahoe).
Long story short, we all roll up to the cabin (5 hour ride up into Maine) and he is not there. Well, we burn through a bunch of 30 packs and he finally rolls up...in his Tahoe. We ask what happened, it broke down....tranny started shifting down on its own, for no reason. HE decided to stop and have it towed when it dropped to second at 55.
He got flamed to death for that British POS....LMAO

That seems a little steep considering it is the pre-update year. You won't be getting the upgrades of the newer ones for that money like the 1FZ, full-float rear axle, disc brakes all around, f+r lockers, etc.

Trade this in. Transmission starting acting up and went into limp mode on the way up there. They gave me what I was asking, gave an inspection, and got it for less than they were asking.
Came home with this.
The wife has actually agreed to help work on it, and learn about it. She even set a limit as to how much she'd spent on repairs before we sold it. So we'll see what happens, but at least I still have the 4runner!

Nice ride, but be willing to get dirty and stay dirty if things go south. You better have an array of tools and a good deal of patience. As 02se stated, Rover mechanics are never looking for work.
British automobile engineering can be just awful; nothing more needed to be said here.
But nothing beats the smile on a pretty woman, so enjoy it.

I knew a couple Land Rover techs and I've had the unfortunate pleasure of "working" on many of them.
Basically if they're not leaking, they're doing something wonky with the electrics, or the mechanicals are acting up.
Hell Top Gear US did an episode in 2013 for the best "luxury SUV" and their NEW Range Rover Sport was freaking out electronically (the suspension system was acting up and even had the car reverse raked for a good chunk of the episode) and the roof was leaking through the dome light.
I'd love an older Defender mainly because they are very bare bones, the newer stuff is very capable off-road from what I have seen... but the equipment and their history is so bad I wouldn't trust them on a trail.

It's pretty bad going into a purchase with a set limit on what you will spend to fix it when you know it is going to fall apart. I had a friend in college with a practically brand new Land Rover and he got so frustrated with it he trashed it for an F-150. Best of luck, hopefully it won't give you too much trouble. Should have looked at getting her an FJ Cruiser.

I'm loving to words of encouragement around here. You guys are acting like I just traded my 4runner for this. My truck had several things wrong with it, and those were several things that I didn't want to mess around with. This isn't going to be her daily driver so I'm not that worried about it right now. Plus I still have no car payments which is a plus. Setting the limit is just how we do it with any used car we buy. There'e no point to continually dump money into something just to have something else go wrong.
Plus, aren't dreams meant to be crushed? She'll learn some day, most likely after hours of work and chucking tools into the woods. She had two dream cars, a VW Bus (currently restoring that dream), and the DII (soon to be restoring that dream). The VW has been a bust and now she wants to sell it after 3 years PITA work by yours truly. Cutting, welding, grinding, bondo, and more for 3 years now. Wanna take bets on how long her current dream will last?
Now feel free to commence with the whining. :gossip:

So your wife admits that despite all your toil and effort, the VW bus restoration has been a bust, and yet she wants you to toil away on another project that could be just as much of a PITA as the VW has been? Does she enjoy causing you mental anguish? Nonetheless trading in the Fix Or Repair Daily was the correct thing to do.
My friend's brother had one in Forrest Green and he got 186,000 miles out of it with only having to change out the leaking oil pan gasket at about 120,000 miles and a fuel pump at 150,000. Otherwise, just normal wear and tear. If you get lucky enough with yours, it is a fun drive.

No whining here. Feel free to do what you want. I'm just letting you know the perspective of someone that occasionally worked on those piles for a living, and who has friends that still work on those things almost exclusively.
