I finally got a chance this weekend to finish my headlights. I got the old out and the new in in just under an hour; getting that fifth screw in near the wheel well is a real PITA.

For those of you who don't know I've been working on a retrofit that took me just over a month to do, spending time off and on (and when the kids were asleep.) I retrofitted a set of Lexus LS projectors into some '06 housings and fit them into my '05 Runner. I used the washer mod, clear lens sway, and did a custom shield and the color and cutoff is outstanding. I am extremely pleased with the results. Everything was done with OEM materials and the result is 100X better than my plug n' play 9006 kit. I have zero stray light above the cutoff.

Yes, it has the triangle shape in the grille, and other than tacking on extensions to the grille (which I might do) it doesn't bother me to bad right now. I did have to give my Waag grille guard to my brother (he has an '05 as well) because the contour wouldn't fit around the more bulbous 06 housings, but it gave me a reason to get a Jaos center protector. Anyway, before the "this thread is worthless without pictures" replies come, I'll have them up when the truck is clean.

doesn't the '06 OEM projector beam pattern is good enough for a direct plug and play HID kit? for me i think it is very good already, is there a necessary to take out the factory projectors and custom lexus projectors in? just curious. maybe i am not a too picky person.
 
big difference between a halogen projector and and an HID projector. unfortunately I did not take a side by side shot when I had the two apart, but it can easily be seen just by looking at how the bowl is formed and the internal dynamics of how the projector is put together (shield and so forth.) More importantly, how the light is projected. Don't get me wrong the halogen projector looks about ten times better than my p'n'p kit reflectors, but no where near as nice as a projector that was designed for HID bulbs. IMO of course. HIDplanet is an excellent source and I really learned a lot from those guys, if you get a chance check the forums over there out. Incidently, they speak highly of the MDX and 4Runner halogen projector for what it is...
 
mind if you can tell me how long it takes you to complete the whole project and how much you've spent on it?
 
it took me about a month working on it sparingly when I had the time. I two sons; a 2 year old, and a 3 month old, so my time is not really my own. essentially I bought a set of 2006 housings that were perfect other than one broken tab on each (I was nervous about that, but after mounting them 4 bolts is more than enough to hole each side I was happy to learn after all my work.) I paid like $150 for those, the projectors were like $200. the bulbs and ballasts I already had luckily, i did buy the Nissan butyl to seal them back up...$25 The new trim filler pieces were like 60 all in painted and delivered. That's about it... oh a wiring harness. All the prices are just what you make of it and how hard you look for deals.
 
prices are not too bad, i am waiting on the pictures, also can you take a shot of what the back of the housing looks like now? i am trying to find a way out to eliminates glare, better cut-off also on the other hand try not to take the whole headlight housing off the car. thank you so much. like on my other thread mentioned bout the squirrel finder spot, some people on the hidplanet.com said MDX, Camry, 4Runner projectors all have the same factor, and the easiest way is to block the holes/splits on the shield to get rid of the extra glare.
 
that's true. as far as the picture of the back of the housing, it looks the same as yours because I sealed it using the existing rubber boot. The portruding part is just for a true HID D2S bulb instead of an H11. I am not sure that you can accomplish anything without taking it off though. I would think that you'd have to take the housing off, and then apart to get at the projector to do any kind of modification.

that means you had to bake the housing apart to get the projectors out? if so, ouch, i really hate that process.... :(
 
still no pics? Come on man, you're just holding out on us now. I don't care how dirty your truck is, post some pics! :-)
