I finally found my engine noise.

So the runner has been making a slight knocking noise on decel. A friend told me it was a wrist pin. I'm thinking to myself, well it could be worse. The noise got a lot worse, so I decided it's time to tear it down and replace the wrist pin. The wrist pin was good, but I found out why I was making so much noise.

So I'm now on the complete rebuild.

Pistons .20 Over
Rod and Main Bearings .10 Over

Still could have been much worse. I was hoping for some advice before going further then I am currently. I have the pistons in, the oil pickup has been cleaned and reinstalled, and I've put the rear main seal on. Should I put the oil pan on now? Or should I put the timing cover and misc on first? I did the head gasket about a year ago, I didn't have to remove the pan for that, so I just sealed what was accessible. But I'd like to not have to do this again. Any tips? Comments? 1 upers?

You're right toyotech I didn't. Due to the low oil pressure caused by the massive pile of crud on the oil pick up, I starved it for oil. the bearings were severly scared, and some of them even broken, One had started to spin. So it was a combination of several things, but it ultimately required a full on rebuild.

didnt see the picture in the 1st post till now. i can see now and a rebuild was the right thing to do. be worth it once done

Note - SeaFoam added to the oil can keep this from happening.

I hear a shot of ATF a day/10-20 miles before you change the oil can help too. I haven't tried it yet though.

It's actually not sludge. There was not a bit of sludge in the engine. That was the old timing chain guide, I thought I got it all out when I upgraded to the heavy duty guides, but apparently not. I certainly didn't think it would have attached itself to the pick up screen.
