Im goin on the rough country run in june, I already have front and rear shackles, cb and fire extinguisher. What should I spend this $100 on? I was thinking 3"x30' tow strap, and maybe a high lift? Eventually I want a snatch strap, but I am thinking those are more for mudd and snow, which I wont be in either on this run so I think that can wait. Help me spend this money wisely fellas. What do I need and what can I bum if I need it?

If you're going with friends, get the strap first, if it's only you then grab the hi-lift. If you find some crazy deals, get BOTH!!!

Strap first, then hilift. Strap and hilift for 100 would take some serious detective work (that is if you bought quality gear and not crap) I recently picked up a new hi lift extreme and the bar holder for it and that cost me 120. When it comes to safety and recovery, I make a point to buy nice stuff, I am not putting my ass on the line because I want to save ten bucks.

Are you really goin offroading - technically what it means? so off road and recovery gears are priorities?

Or, just some adventure/expedition type run.

You might need a roof basket..so you can throw some of your stuff up and have more cabin space for your dog. :snacker:

This will be my 1st trail ride, so I really dont know what to expect really, Ive been muddin n such before with buddies, but just im muddy fields and small ditches, and not in my runner. We are going here http://www.toyota-4runner.org/general-discussions/84693-1st-annual-rough-country-trail-ride-harlan-ky-june-25th-26th.html

Also, a high lift is used if your hi centered right? Just enough lift to get ur body/frame off the terrain?

I was about to post basically the same thing, except with the hi-lift tool kit (strap included) from amazon and say save another $20, but looks like you figured out something similar.

high lifts are cool, but without sliders, you can't even jack your truck up with it!
Not true. The hi-lift can still be used to jack up the vehicle (without sliders) if you buy the wheel strap attachments. It can also be used as a winch when combined with a tow strap or chain.

The wheel straps are only $30, or you could use some heavy duty straps.

Also my main reason for recommending the hi-lift is that it can also be used as a winch.

I've never seen those wheel straps before... pretty cool!

Forget about the Hi Lift.. Unless you have Aftermarket Bumpers and sliders ..You will Not have any lift points on a stock runner...Plus Hi Lifts Can be Very Dangerous if you dont use them correctly.
Save your money until you can afford a lft

Why don't people read other posts before repeating the same info?

The jack can be used with hi-lift wheel straps and it can also be used as a winch. And I've used it on my tow hitch before when needed.

Yeah that's the kit I was talking about but it doesn't include the wheel straps.

If you plan on going alone, I have another vote for the hi lift jack. But make sure you read the manual and watch lots of instruction videos and then test it in your driveway before you get on the trail. They are "dangerous" but only if used incorrectly and not respected.

You can use it without sliders/bumpers. Here is the 'liftmate'

Hi-Lift Lift-Mate (LM-100) - lift vehicle wheel directly from the wheel | Hi Lift Jack Company I got mine for 35$ at the local offroad store.

Yes, I am a vendor here, but I have also been wheeling for many years. Have introduced many people to offroading and here are my recommendations.

I would suggest a strap to go with your shackles. IMO if you get stuck (more likely than blowing or popping a tire) being able to pull out your strap and getting a quick rescue from a fellow wheeler is wise money spent.

I've used straps dozens of times. A highlift maybe a handful.

Check out what we have to offer.

I'd also recommend an air compressor is invaluable. Airing down and up again is almost mandatory for offroading. It's a drag to have to ask someone to borrow their air compressor, and having to wait until they are finsihed doing their air up before you can do yours. Then everyone is waiting around for the guy who didn't come prepared LOL.

Along with the air compressor get yourself a basic tire gauge. We will provide one free with any air compressor purchased.

Cheers

How quickly do those compressors air back up a tire? They look so small lol

In Order to use a Hi Lift as a " winch" you need an addtl anchor point to connect to And sometimes they are not around or far away , Have you ever really tried to use a Hi Lift as a winch ??? Seriously ?? That is such a last resort its not even funny ...Better be a wieght lifter as well ...Most straps will just stretch and you need chains to use as a winch ... Just imagine jacking your 6000Lb vehicle 1 inch at a time 48 times to maybe move 30" if your lucky ..try it sometime...Im Just sayin 100 bucks on a stock runner can be used better inmho.
