I got rear ended

So, I got rear ended the other day. Was wondering if you guys could guestimate the damage.. Very minor because of the hitch. I assume they will have to replace bumper. There is a little ding I don't have a picture of that I don't think they will be able to get out, hence replacing the whole bumper.

Was stopped in traffic, got rear ended at 15mph. His insurance is taking care of it, going to get formal quotes today, but before I was just curious.

I think all they'll have to do is replace the bumper cover... couple hundred at most. If they have to replace the bumper it's another story. If your receiver was torqued then that will also be a little more.

I was rear ended a year ago this week, and I did not have a hitch on it at the time. It dented the hatch, cracked the bumper, "damaged" the receiver ( i think it scuffed it), and ruined the bumper cover. $1900 after a $400 deductible.

At a minimum it should be enough to offset a little. Get a quote for a new steel bumper along with a quote for the OEM bumper. Even if they won't pay directly for the steel bumper, most insurance companies are willing to cut a check to you for the value of the OEM estimate and allow you to do the work yourself.

But you have to prove/certify you actually did the work, or else they won't pay again if you get rear-ended again. :thumb3:
 
I had another brand car that was rear ended and they replaced the whole bumper. The body shop told me that they don't repaint plastic bumpers because the paint will eventually crack. [Of course this could be a way to get more money out of the insurance company]. I think it ended up being close to a grand for their insurance company.

PS - the D-Ring hitch really did a number on the other car. Wow!
 
You can see where that hitch said "f'k you" to his bumper. Throw some plastidip on the valence and use the money for necessary sh*t. Your 4Runner is going to get bumps and bruises along the way so a few little knicks on the rear end of the vehicle where nobody but you really notices isn't worth spending money on. I get it though, your truck is new and you want it to stay that way for as long as possible. Mines a 2004 and I think the same way. Try some plastidip first and see if that cures your "new car emotions". Hopefully it does because those valences are stupidly expensive and the money you get from his insurance will be able to buy you some pretty nice upgrades.

I don't really care about new car emotions.. I've already pinstriped it. Oh well.. It's a vehicle. I really just want some steel out of the deal.. Gnome'sayin.
 
Cup holders are the new superchargers. Seriously.

But yeah worst case if you want that bumper cover I'll sell you the one off mine when we do the CBI rear install for cheap.

I was front ended by a rear end in my last car, a VW Golf, and the guy's Suburban or Escalade, whatever, had a hitch installed and basically he went over the line, and realized he was in the intersection, and despite having plenty of room between his back end and the front bumper of my car, gunned it in reverse and basically destroyed the front end of my golf. Not a scratch on his SUV.

So I see the value of keeping something installed at all times, it just sucks for the person behind you.

Make sure you can still unscrew the bolt in your strap loop hook-up. It looks bent since it took the full impact.
 
I think i just got inspired.

I am using my rig to trailer my racebike up to NJ this weekend. I usually use my F150. but with this incident, i think i will keep the hitch on the Runner more frequently...to smash any idiot who cant see a 6-and a half ft tall super white SUV in front of them in time to stop at a red light...

I should start installing my pointed trailer hitch so the damage to the other car is more severe. :) I got rear ended too just a month ago and had a dent to the rear hatch and bumper. I brought my car to a body shop just a few days ago to have it fixed and guess what, I got a 2015 4runner sr5 rental car. Sweet! both have the 1GRFE engine and the one for 2015 model looks different. that rear end of the 4runner is really strong... I hope the frame is not bent.

I had pretty much the exact same accident this time last year. Total paid out by the other person's insurance was just under $1100. That was to replace the rear valence, bumper cover, trailer hitch and repaint. I didn't even think of the hitch but the adjuster said it could have damaged welds and wanted to replace it anyway. (Impact was under 5mph so I doubt it took any real damage)

I ended up cashing out and getting a new set of wheels. I bought some $5 clips that broke off from the dealer and just plastidipped the valence.
