Now that I'm in the painting mood, I was thinking about painting the bumpers. Any thoughts?

License Plate Trim

Hey, how did you get the Plasti-Dip to stick to the chrome license plate trim? When I did tried it, the paint came off as I would peel the excess away. I even took an exact-o knife and scored the edge around the trim, but the Plasti-Dip on the trim itself would start rolling back soon after.

My trim was painted a grey color, not chrome. I just cleaned the surface real good and did the exact-o-knife around the trim. The rubber seal around the trim is where I ran into my problem with pulling the excess. I had to peel it off and start over:redbrick:, just give it more coats for thickness and it should be good.
 
I'm going to try it on my faded plastic unpainted flares and see how it holds up through the summer along with the emblems and license plate trim.

Do it. So worth it. Hit it with some flat clear after, or else it will get stained.

As soon as you so much as touch dirt or mud with it, it will stain permanently. Anyone who says otherwise is full of sh!t or hasn't gotten them dirty with real dirt, yet. I have not found a way to clean it and I have tried everything that's reasonable to try. Basically, If I can't clean em with soap, forget it.

That's when I decided to clear coat the plastidip. It makes it resistant to staining and doesn't have that rubbery "cling to every piece of lint and dust" characteristic anymore.

Got rid of the chrome and the side trim. I like it a lot better without.

i'm so glad you did this. i've been wanted to black out the chrome on my white runner but didn't really know how it'd look. you helped me make my decision. thank you!
 
plasti dip

Silly question, but what is the piece of trim called on the back of the 4runner that the lic plate bolts to? I need to paint (maybe plasti-dip)mine, how does it attach to the 4runner, I've seen a few people paint it where it is rather than removing it. Will emblems stick to that surface after using plastidip, or should you put them on prior to painting and paint them then?
How does that stuff wear over time?

Durability is just dictated by how many coats of Plastidip you use. I used 5 coats on all parts I've done.

They're not very durable really, it you scraped them against something, it will damage the coat. The rear flares on my 4runner, for example, get all jacked from people entering and exiting the back seats.

In the back though, where they're not likely to be touched, you should be fine. Without a coat of clear though, they're likely to stain.

how plausible is it to just paint the flares?
