how plausible is it to just paint the flares?

A good primer, paint, and clear should look fine. I would be skeptical to it's durability on the rear flares, again... but what can you do. I did the plasti dip because it's removable.

Painting the flares after they've been plastidipped, that's an idea.

or better yet, suede, so I can't drive in water
