i got some questions that need answering. help please.

So right now im running 18" KMC xd series monsters with 285's. The tires are about to need to be replaced. I think im getting around 13 or 14 MPG. I was thinking about switching to stock 5 stars if i can find some and gettting some 285's from treadwright. Would switching from the 18's on 285's to stock 16's on 285's with more agressive tread (toyo AT's on the rims now, id switch to BFG AT's or MTR's on the stock rims) make a noticeable difference as far as gas milage? Just for looks heres a comparison

im kinda starting to think the rims make it look a little overdone anyways and i think itd look sick with 5 stars's.

so my questions are:
1. would my MPG's change noticeably at all if switched?
2. which look do you guys like better?
3.Is anyone interested in the rims?
4. does anyone know where to get stock 5 stars?

1. Most likely. Less rotational mass = technically better MPG. Rim weighs more than tire.

2. I like the idea of 16" or 17" wheels, but not the ones in that last photo. Maybe the 5 star limited wheel from 1999, or some Tundra rims.

13 or 14 does sound pretty low. I still averaged about 16 with my 285s. I definitely agree 5 stars would look better and should result in better gas mileage, but with 285s you just can't expect great MPG.

If the tires you are considering switching to are the same physical diameter then I don't think your MPG will improve. 285 is a measure of tire width, it does not indicate diameter by itself.

I know that physical mass is a factor but IMO the biggest factor is diameter of the tire. That is what has the largest impact on the drive train. This is why going from 31 to 33" despite the tire width will make your MPG go down.

Run the calculator and let us know the diameter differences....

Lets not forget to make the calculation for the difference in what your odometer says you traveled and what you actually traveled (if thats how you're getting your mpgs anyways). Your 285s will cover more ground per rotation than stock tires.

Also I'm sure the OP is referring to the 285s for an 18" rim that would be the same size as a 285/75r16 since that is a common width/diameter.

The 5 stars look better, dark wheels on dark trucks don't look good, stick to the stock wheel and leave them unpainted.

If you go with 16" treadwrights, you gas mileage will actually get worse. The retreads are much heavier then non-capped tires and it will take more gas to turn these tires then the lighter 18" tire.

As singtoe stated those treadwrights are stupid heavy. Look into man. They killed the mileage and power on my buddies 1st gen. He now has duratracs.

I knew there had to be a drawback. Cheap tires with great tread, of course, they're heavier than KM2's and Duratracs. It was too good to be true.

I saw some 5 stars on ebay last week... imo thats a good idea, its cheap and easy to paint em if you want to stay with the black. just the dif in wheel weight should help you out even if the tire size itself doesnt change much..

Thanks for the great question. I asked my supervisor and this is what he said,


"This can really vary depending on brand. For example, a new BFG 265/75R16 A/T KO weighs 54 lbs. Our Warden 265/75R16 E weights about 58 lbs. So we are about 4 lbs heavier. Now if you were to compare a new Michelin the same size weighs about 46 lbs. So if a customer that formerly had a Michelin A/T tire went to our Warden with a BFG casing then he would have a tire the weighs about 14 lbs more then his former tires. We don't list weights on the tires because we too many different brands and they vary too much to do that."
