I hate my automatic transmission

I have a 90 with a 3.slow. The automatic transmission makes the power situation much worse. I'm constantly switching the overdrive off and on and manually shifting on the hills.

I would love to take it out and put in a 5 speed manual tranny w/ clutch. Anyone out there done this operation? Will it all just bolt in or is that just not the way it works? Any input greatly appreciated.

It is pretty straight forward, you will need a 5 speed transmission with transfer case, clutch, flywheel, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, clutch master and slave and 5 speed pedal assmebly. Also you will need to jumper your neutral start switch so your ECU will allow you to start the engine as it thinks you still have an auto trans that is in gear. Everything bolts up as it should but you will need to do some cutting for your master cylinder and shift levers.
I may be leaving a couple of odds and ends out but this swap has been done many, many times and is recorded on several sites.

Or you could sell your rig, take the money you were going to dump into it, and buy a post-95 4runner with a manual & 3.4l engine. In the end you'd probably save money and have a truck you'd be happier with.

you had to have know that the 3.0 is not the most power full trk out there .

Yeah, I've often thought of buying a more recent model. I guess I'm "emotionally attached" as I've done loads of work in my current 90 and it's running like a top. I think the best improvement I've made is installing "cargo" strength springs in the rear. I'm a housepainter and haul lots of equipment and with those springs it's a beautiful thing! And the whole proposition cost less then $200.

I think I'm going to drive it for awhile more and probably sell it at my Dad's in California. (I'm in Arizona) The blue book there is $1,000 higher then in Arizona.

But if I find a wrecked something with a 3.4 and 5 speed.....get out the air tools!


Oh yeah, I shut off the OD all the time. But no matter what when it comes to driving uphill, who let the dogs out.
