i hate my local body shop.

so my truck has been gone for a week and a half, finally to rid itself of the hundreds of hail dents and tailgate damage. i go to pick it up today and its out in the parking lot. i get excited to see the freshness!

but of course, its not what was expected.

-over spray below both side view mirrors
-cracked (again!) side view mirror
-over spray around rear window
-paint missing from license plate area
-buffer marks EVERYWHERE
-wax is still sitting on it
-my rear right seatbelt is not even bolted down
-my LED blue dome light has 16 broken LED's
-over spray on the side of the tailgate
-oh and i think my hydraulic gate lifts are broken.

last but not least:

my SR5, Toyota, and 4Runner Emblems are all in the wrong place. in fact on the wrong sides.

im pretty pissed off with them. im taking it back tomorrow. has anyone (i hope not) had trouble like this with a body shop? or is my local shop the epitome of crappy shops?

I had my previous tundra at a Toyota certified body shop about 4 years ago. The vehicle was involved in a major accident which resulted in frame damage. The frame was repaired but it still showed some signs of damage. The manager there told me it was ok as long as it was straight. Some emblems were taken off, but they did not even bother to put them on. The paint on the front bumper wasn't that good. Some knobs in the interior were either taken off or broken. Basically, the shop did not care about little details. It's like as long as your car runs, it's good to go, and "Cha Ching."

I got rid of that vehicle due to numerous problems anyway.

If the damage on your vehicle is covered under your insurance policy, I would tell your agent about it and see what he or she can do to satisfy your expectation.

Given the laundry list of problems you experienced on a simple repair I would suggest another body shop. See if the insurance company will allow it. You really need to test your patience here and ensure it is done properly no matter how long it takes. The body shop made major mistakes on what seems like every portion of the repair. Most body shops are not as bad as what you experienced. This does not sound like a lack of attention to detail, it sounds like amateur hour with people who have no business touching a vehicle.

I worked in a shop for a few years, not only are those problems easily avoidable, they are unacceptable.

Bring it back, ask for a loaner and be polite. Give them a chance to make it right, perhaps tha manager is not aware of work like this leaving the shop.

ps
Unleash hell on them if they give you any hassle. Shops that do schitty work can lose the ability to do insurance referral work.

Been there, done that, got the crappy body work.

Crooked bumper, terribly mismatched paint (you could spot it across a football field), visible sanding marks, cruise control disconnected, overspray on the windows, truck had a terrible odor inside, tow hooks installed backward,.... Only took 'em about a month to do all that damage. The Manager was far less than helpful. He felt that denial was the best customer service.

Kenny Kent "Toyota Certified" Collision Center in Evansville, IN.

A lady I know had her Lexus "fixed" there too. Again, visible body filler, trim hanging off, sunvisors re-installed backward, sunroof no longer closes all the way....

Bottom line - "Toyota Certified" doesn't mean squat.

thanks for the input. im making a list as i go, and im hopefully getting it all corrected.

i was nervous about giving it to them. and it proves i should have been.

I would let the insurance company know but, they cant actually do the repairs and can only note the quality issues if its a direct repair situation.
If you picked the shop and they are not on the DRP list your company cannot even threaten to take them off the list. In that case they really have zero control and legally cannot steer people away from a shop.
THe insurance compnay pays you for the cost of repairs. They ,ay include the shop name on the check to legally protect a lien holder if there is one listed. YOU pay the shop. Your are the shops customer. Those sound like common complaints for a shop. All sounded simple enough to fix. Make a list and go over it with the shop manager. Then check off your list when you go over the pick up again. The shop may need to put you in a loaner. THe repair time has already been reasonable. This is now a warranty issue between you and the shop.
