I hate rust

So I bought a 98 runner from a guy who thought it had a blown headgasket cause radiator blew out. Got there looked at it not much rust interior was in ok shape so I bought it for $400. I knew the engine and trans was worth more then that. We'll I got it home put a radiator in it and she ran great. A little background on myself I work at a toyota dealership and have a 04 runner also. I want to use this one as more of a camping and expedition vehicle and leave my 04 alone for now. But I lifted on my rack at home today and found a patch in the frame near the passenger rear trailing arm. Idk how I didn't see it when I bought it but I missed it and now I'm cutting and patching a frame. I've done this befor so it's no big deal but still not the most fun. Lots of people here with rust issues in the same place as you.

Glad I don't have to deal with that down south.
 
Yea mine is not that bad at all. I found just a few spots. I'm going to fix it all. Then start looking for a backup motor and trans. This one had 299k on it and I want to build a fresh one. I'll start a build thread on it soon.

Rust happens from the inside out on the frame. That lower mount looks to be in pretty bad shape. That spot is definitely a problem area on both side as well as a few other areas.
 
Man rust sucks! 21 century and you'd think we would have a legit chemical or paint that 100% cures or stops rust. Then again business is business.

Mine migrated from 16 years in Colorado to Texas. Just a little rust on the trailer hitch and slight surface rust on the axle and that's all. Kind of surprised

Props for trying to save it. But damn that is bad rust. If you use por15 make sure you use their prep and degreaser chemicals.
 
I have a problem with going a little over board on patching frames. The frame didn't need that much patch or that thick of metal but it sure can't hurt to have extra metal there.
