I have changed my driving habits

Due to the high cost of gas I have adjusted my driving.

I never go over 65 MPH on the highway and I accelerate much more gently and as a result have gained about 3MPG or 60 miles more per tank. I try to stay at 60MPH but its hard to do.

I used to drive between 70-80 MPH. Reducing my speed 10-15 MPH makes a huge difference.

I have the V8 and I went 440 miles on 20 gallons. I used the odometer not the computerized fuel display. Before I would go about 380-384 miles on 22 gallons

In addition to reducing the max highway speed to 65mph, I also accelerate slower "off the line".

That resulted in 13% improvement in MPG: it increased from 19.8 combined to 22.4 combined. :bigok:

I did not use the on-board comp, but rather calculated the based opn actual consumption over more than 1000 miles to ensure accurate results. :yesyes:

In the morning I see drivers tail gating and having to brake all the time. I tend to give a little more room and if someone slows down, I slow down instead of brake. The only thing is some people cut in front of you, but hey that happens.

I also have sowed down a bit and try to drive more smoothly and it does tend to help, not a much as getting a Civic or a Camry, but it does help.

I'm trying to work on it but I still don't have the patience to drive and accelerate that slow yet but I am working on it but since my t-belt/water pump change I have gained a consistent 25 more miles a tank and a very solid 17mpg all city.

I can drive our xB as hard as I want and I still get no lower than 29 all city so I just try to drive the Runner less.

Nice job. You would be surprised by how driving the speed limit , starts / stops , tire pressure , ect... can really help.

I love my V8 and have no problems with the gas milage , it does drain the wallet though when putting in as much fuel as I do or any of us for that matter.

It makes you start rethinking tire choices , lifts , brushguards , off road lights , ect..... that all cause wind drag.

I made a thread about gas usage and talked about the roof cross rails , yes they do cause wind drag. I bought my 4R with 2 other guys so we got 3 of them pretty much at the same time. the other 2 own a chain of body shops (which my son paints for) and the have both removed their rear spoiler , filled / painted the holes , put in the new 3rd brake lamp. I can't answer for the rest of the 4th gen. spoilers , but the 06 humped one has got to be a pretty good wind drag I would guess since it actually was designed to catch the wind and blow it down across the back window to keep it clean. Thats its only purpose other than cosmetic. I personally would rather not even have it because I don't care for the look.

I've been trying to keep it down but 65MPH is pretty tough around here a lot of the time, you get blown off the road by almost everyone going 75-80+.

It's funny how people complain about gas prices and still drive the same wasteful ways.

Keep tires inflated at correct pressure, do regular tune-ups, don't haul any unnecessary weight, that all helps.

If I drive my 90 4runner like I don't care I can get <20 MPG. Steady 60-65 on the highway I can get 25+. I've been averaging 22 lately.

Once in a while I'll commute 120 miles round trip in one day. I have noticed a lot more cruisers (cruise controllers) on the highways more often. I'm one of them but I've been doing it with my previous vehicle even before the whole gas thing. Now, when someone pulls behind me who isn't a cruiser, they'll get impatient and go around to find I'm right behind some 5 other vehicles cruising on the highway. In fact, first time I've ever seen someone use me as their excuse as to why they are cruising along at posted speeds. They cruised it right behind me some 50 miles. In a way the cost of high fuel has made an interesting view of little cars buzzing around me instead of the Excursions and Armadas behemothing down the highway.

i never adjusted my driving habits per say, but they have ended up like yours. I do NOT go over 65mph on the highway, and I barely break 2k rpms accelerating, usually more like 17-1800......

I drive like a *****, because I know I am not ;-).

I certainly don't care about the speed. I drove my Ducati super fast for a couple of hours. Sometimes hitting speeds of 120 mpg. I still got over 50 mpg. If you are that concerned about you gas mileage sell the 4 Runner. If you get a scooter you probably can get 90 mpg.

Changed driving habits

I too changed. I drive the wife's CR-V to and from work (45 miles roundtrip). I let the wife drive the T4R for the short trips that she does during the day. She's probably putting on half the mileage that I did. And believe me, it was really tough to give up the Runner. But, I do still drive it on the weekends so she know that I still love her.

Man, my heart goes out to you - my father-in-law has a CR-V and I drove it several times. Each time I could not wait to get back into my T4R again.

I let the wife drive the T4R for the short trips that she does during the day.

That must have been tough...

But, I do still drive it on the weekends so she know that I still love her.

Also if we are just running around town nowadays we are more likely to take my fiancee's Civic

Mostly I just drive my 4Runner a couple miles to the BART station this time of year save a long trip out of town or the odd camping trip.

Taking the rig up to Tahoe for snowboarding this winter is going to add up.

I'm down to 10.7 L/100kms up here in my 2007 V6 SE.

That is pretty good. I get about 9.9L/100kms in my 2.4L-4Cyl Honda Accord! haha
