1. The V6 is a good engine but slow for a V6 there was a head gasket recall on it, other then that you can get 200-300K if it is taken care of

The 22R -E is bullet proof Toyota has been producing that engine and put them in all models for 30yrs.

Not sure about the soft top I have a 2nd Gen so I don't know much about the soft top.
Maybe a 1st gen. guy will chime in.

The 22RE is a hell of an engine. Completely bulletproof. One of my friends swears by the V6, but I run a 22RE and it is the balls. The 22RTE did come out in a 4Runner, as I have seen the entire trucks on Ebay. I have seen several trucks that were V6's that are toasted. I would stick with the 22RE.

Sorry bout not mentioning the soft tops, but there are several other threads on this website about soft tops. Here is one: Soft Tops . They are quite pricey, but I guess they are worth it.

Which V6, 3.0 or 3.4 ? I'd take a 22RE over a 3.0.

22RTE came in 86-87 model year trucks and Runners (some late 85 and early 88's also). I've got a complete RTE engine in my garage, don't know whether to sell it or stick it in my Runner.

Only full soft top still made is the old Kayline top from STC.

is it tru that a 22RTE was made???
yes it is true. 86' and 87' they had a turboed engine if you could find one. toyota only sold them with the automatic tranny in the u.s. but you can find them with a 5-speed in them usually from canada, my local yota dealer had one and they wanted 12,000$ for it!

The 3VZE is sluggish, has worse fuel economy, big which fills engine compartment therefore difficult to work in and parts connected to it.Aso even the so called new or improved headgasket 3VZE's still had headgasket issues.
The 22R-E engines is one of the best engines ever made and can easily give you 1 million miles:

My mechanic calls the 22RE the 'holy grail of truck engines.'

His wife drives a 90 4Runner like mine, with the 22RE. Mine has 200K, hers has 380K.

As long as you maintain it, it just keeps running and running...

The 22re engine is awesome. I have over 227,000 miles on it and it still runs like a top. If you keep the maintence up, it will run forever.

As for softtops. Can-back still makes ones. It's pretty expensive, but it's a pretty decent one too. Their website is www.can-back.com.

Downey makes a bikini top that is just the top, no windows or anything.

And there is a new company called killer toy tops. Their tops look awesome and they're not to expensive either. Their website is http://www.killertoytops.com/?q=node.

I got the can-back because at the time that was the only one available. But I wish I had seen the killer toy tops one cause that one looks BA>
