2008 4R V6 2WD: Less than 1K Miles. Engine Noise. Normal? Feedback appreciated.

Hi Everyone-

New member with a first time post... I apologize in advance for the long post...

Purchased a brand new '08 Sport Edition (2WD) here in Dallas, about three weeks ago (love it!) Before this awesome truck, I had a 1998 4Runner that gave me 215K trouble-free miles.

Now for my question/problem...

The V6 in my new '08 has a slight "clattering" sound that I notice under heavy throttle. I did some searching within these forums and I found several posts which describe the same problem but, they mention that it's usually in cold weather. That's where my problem is different. I'm in Texas right now and it's 105 degrees during the day.

The noise isn't noticeable except when under heavier accelleration. And, honestly, I don't really even notice it unless I have the windows down. Way back in the day, I had a Maxima with about 160K miles on it---it was pretty worn out but kept going even with a broken manifold. The sound that my '08 4Runner is making reminds me of that "clattering" sound that I had on my Maxima before I got the manifold repaired. Although, it's not anywhere quite that bad.

With only 819 miles on my '08 and suspecting that something was wrong (possibly with the manifold) I took it back to the dealer and they're telling me this is normal for this particular engine.

I don't recall this type of noise with my 98 4Runner--granted, that was a whole different engine, altogether.

Does anyone else have the V6 and experience this type of noise--and not related to cold weather startup, etc.? Again, the noise isn't noticible from inside the cabin. And, it's really only apparent under heavier accelleration and if I have the windows down (please, no advice to just "roll the windows up" LOL)

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brent

Yes, I and others have the noise. I postulate that the design of the thinwall exhaust manifolds allow some noise to get out. It's annoying but not a problem.

Edit: I forget, I read an FJCruiser and a Tacoma forum occasionally. I PM'd you that I had read about it and experienced it. I may have read it on one of those forums.

Hey guys...this post has gotten over 200 views in less than 24 hours and only one response? Any input from anyone else?

I have another appointment with the dealer in the morning and would like all the input that I can get.

Hit me back with some input! :)

I have an 08 Urban Runner with the V6, and have also noticed this. I notice it on mine mostly when its sitting in the driveway at an idle (slight "clicking" noise) coming from the engine comp. I don't really hammer on mine very often, but a couple of times that I have been towing and had to get on it, I remember hearing what you are describing.

CJ3Flyr's hypothesis about the thin exhaust manifold walls makes sense. I will take a peek under the hood of mine later tonight and see if I can isolate where the noise is coming from...
