I just bought a Trail Edition

Well, after getting the runaround for the past several days, I finally found a dealer large enough to have access to some sort of nation-wide database.

She did some investigating and reported that there were only 18 Trail Edition vehicles currently listed as physically being in the US with the first shipment. About an hour later, she told me she was able to trade their allotted Limited edition for a Trail.

So, BAM, I put my money down and am the new owner of a Graphite Gray Metallic 2010 Trail Edition (I really wanted silver but didn't have a choice). I didn't want the Nav or KDSS option but I'm still paying a pretty penny because they are so hard to find.

Unfortunately, I simply don't have the time to wait until they become more available as I'm buying it and then driving it across the country to start a new job.

I take ownership of it between October 25 and November 7 is the best estimate.

I leave for California on November 20 so not much margin for error!

Let the buyer's remorse set in!

Are you sure about the color? I thought it was Magnetic Grey?

You are correct. That is what they are calling it I just can never remember that exact color title. I believe it is the only 4runner color between their silver and black.

I'm sort of worried that the Magnetic Gray will be just dark enough to clash with the unpainted cladding around the base of the Trail Edition. If anything, that's why I liked the Silver. At least with the Silver it was obvious that the color mismatch was intentional.

I'm playing with photoshop now to see what the Gray will look like.

I think that grey will look great with the unpainted cladding. But then again, that's how I like it. I always thought that other SUVs with unpainted classing looked best with grey paint. Think Land Rover LR3 or even early Ford Escapes. IMO, grey was the best color for them because of the color of the unpainted cladding.
 
I paid $39,000 after the standard delivery charges and my state tag fees, etc. State tax will tack on $1,170.

Whenever I got price quotes I was only able to get quotes of around $37k. But then they would call me back saying they couldn't find any of the Trail Editions. So when this place sounded like they could get one but they were asking closer to $38k, I couldn't really complain.

Am I happy about it? Not really. I know if I wait 6 months I might be able to get it for MSRP or maybe a little less. But everything is pointing to them being impossible to find and I have a looming deadline so I don't have much wiggle room.

Also, didn't really want 2WD (which is apparently almost all that is available in the southern states initially).

I'll post pics when I pick up the car but it probably won't be until early November. :(
 
You know for 40k, if you are not 100% certain and happy about it just don't do it. I mean seriously, it's your life and your money and you have a choice.

For one thing, the 09 4runner is still pretty good, you could get one of those for a lot less.

I'd have buyer's remorse no matter what I bought. So I bought the one I wanted. At least now I'll have what i want and feel guilty about it.

This is also my first SUV and I had a major internal hurdle to overcome just to make the switch to an SUV. I'm a biologist. One the one hand, I will use the SUV, on the other, I'm aware how much gas they use and carbon they put out.

Oh well, I'm old enough to know that I can't beat 'em so I just joined 'em!

IF (and that is a big IF) the salesperson at the stealership was correct, about 8% of the 2010 4Runners will be TE, so I think you made the right move getting the one you want.

Yeah, I initially assumed that the TE would be "replacing" the 4th Gen "Sport Edition" but in fact it seems like the 5Gen TE is closer to the 4Gen Sport TE, which was only introduced in 2009 and which were a little uncommon.

It's more that I'm lamenting having to have paid full price.

I would have preferred to wait and bargain but it wasn't an option. Paying over MSRP became a little more tolerable given that the TE may be rare enough that prices won't even come down for several months to a year. Thus, waiting may not have helped me even for the first year.
 
i like that one in the video. some of the ones i have seen are pretty ugly. but that one is pretty cool lookin. i would definetley take those running boards off though.
