I JUST missed Apple Carplay...

Just picked up a 2019 4Runner a couple months ago and I'm absolutely loving it! A little lite on the features but this is fine, I get a quality car that will last for hundreds of thousands of miles and performs like a champ.

My only gripe? Bluetooth is clunky with the iPhone... which I could deal with since there was no other option. Then I go and read an article that the 2020 4Runners will have Apple Carplay!? Someone please tell me that it's as simple as a dealer software update or reflash to get this on the '19s... :redbrick:

I've had some issues with the bluetooth too on iPhone. For me, when I turn on the truck and the phone is working on connecting, if I mess with my phone's audio controls it won't connect properly and ends up playing off the phone.

I’ve been having issues once in a while with my iPhone xs. Sometimes won’t connect and other times the head u it restarts.

I have had an aftermarket audio system in just about every vehicle I have had. When I got my 2018 LE I was pretty satisfied with the audio and bluetooth so I told myself I would not touch this one. Fast forward 10 months later and a spur of the moment trip to Florida and we rented an Audi Q7. Plugged in my phone to charge and CarPlay came up. I fell in love. We used Waze to go everywhere and the audio interface a a little easier to navigate. 2 Days into our 5 day trip i began to research what it would take to integrate CarPlay into my LE.

A few weeks after we got back I had a Maestro interface unit, Alpine ILX-207 and Sirius Sat tuner ready for install. The sound quality of the Alpine is far above and beyond what the OEM headhunt was. I could not be happier with the with how it all turned out. Next upgrade will be Focal separates up front. I am satisfied with the power and the sub but the fronts could be a little crisper. For those looking for a CarPlay solution the aftermarket has some great options.

Apple plays is great until Apple changes things and the version in the 4R becomes obsolete.. As for safety sense, get a Tesla if you don't want to drive lol

I think the 4R is perfect, the updates that people cry for like most modern tech will have some issue at some point and the 'complained about basic 4R' will remain working as it did from the factory. I personally embrace the simplicity of the 4R, as a long time BMW, Audi, general euros car owner (I grew up in Europe) something that those cars lacked was simplicity and electrical stuff was always the crutch, which is always the same stuff now being rolled out to the once 'basic' cars.

All you need is a phone holder and you can do everything from the phone and use Bluetooth to connect to the head unit. Makes no sense to me why the need of car play to begin with.

A lot of these tech such as adaptive this and that is, they are all half-ass attempt currently. The technology is not mature enough to allow 100% auto driving so they put on pieces of half ass-ed efforts here and there. And people suck up to it to be the little guinea pigs.

CarPlay runs from your iPhone. The headunit is essentially an extended monitor. It is not software driven by the oem headunit. Liklyhood of a manufacturer update interfering would be very slim

Because using a phone while driving in some municipalities and states is illegal. Allowing a text message to be read to you, reply and send all why touching anything and never taking you eyes off the road is much more preferable to those drivers swerving from lane to lane. Also integrating nav into the screenAnd being able to interact keeps you legal in those states

Clunky Bluetooth

I haven't had any bluetooth issues. I wonder if the problem is your smartphone. The clunkiness may be that you have many bluetooth gadgets listed. It's good to occassionally remove those that aren't in use. :ballchain:

Dating myself here. I do not even know what CarPlay is so I do not miss it.

You don't want it anyway. I had a Pioneer car play head unit in my Taco and hated it. Car play is so locked down it's almost useless.

Haven't had mine too long and love my Kenwood with CarPlay. Glad I didn't wait. I've already had so many adventures.

Do you guys have reliability issues with your CarPlay/Android Auto?

I drove to Florida and used Waze on about every 3-4 hours it would crash or freeze and require a reboot. So, it was nice that my Nissan NV van nav still worked when the Waze would freak out.

Plus I work a lot of places where Verizon doesn't have coverage. So not having to wait on Maps to attempt to connect is great. Know there is work around for this, but it always seems to me the more integrated and advanced the less reliable it is. I use nav when I go places I've never been. Don't want it crashing.

To be honest, I’ve never used Apple CarPlay. The biggest draws for me were the talk-to-text (and text-to-talk) and the ability to use google maps on my headunit. I know I could mount my phone but I hate having all these screens in front of me and don’t need another distraction while driving.

Sounds like an aftermarket head unit is the way to go... but considering I’d rather spend money elsewhere I think I’ll just learn to cope with my current situation... not really all that bad in the grand scheme of things :thumb3:

Side note- I bought a t4r knowing damn well it was “simple” compared to some of its competition. In about 5-10 years when others are dealing w rrliabikity issues, I’ll just have finished breaking mine in! Absolutely love this truck and no amount of iFeatures could ever make me switch.

you know you can push and hold the button with the face on it, and it brings up siri, from there you can tell it to do quite a few things, like talk to text

Apple Car Play is Great! When it works. :redbrick: I have it in my 2018 Accord and fight with it more than not. Every time I get back in my 4R I love it for the simplicity. Although I do still struggle with Bluetooth connectivity at times.

My solution to happiness.... Upgrade to an aftermarket head unit with Apple Carplay. Seems to be more consistent than the OE car play setups.

What's keeping me from getting an 7" screen aftermarket head unit with Carplay is it looks all generic with all of that extra space on the sides.

So the bigger screen on the 2020 4Runner seems promising but too bad no has a picture yet.

I received an email from Toyota corporate this morning stating they will be "sunsetting" Entune starting with the 2020 Corolla and rolling out CarPlay and Android auto.
FAQ's section:
7. Can I update my current audio multimedia system with Android Auto even though it did not come equipped at purchase?

"Currently there are no plans to make Android Auto available to in-market vehicles. Android Auto will be made available starting with select Model Year 2020 vehicles moving forward."

I would assume that also means Apple CarPlay.

Give me a 2019 with a manual trans, manual T case, E locker, tough cloth seats, no screens, no adaptive anything. Rolling 80 down the hiway or bashing offroad.

Give me AC, heat, radio (but optional), and the luxury of power windows and locks. Nothing more.

This is the truck that will last for 20+ years being used as a truck.

This is the truck that put Toyota rugged strength and reliability on the map, and just pay lip service to today.

Not Apple car play, 20 electronically controlled off road settings, LED headlights, black exhaust tips, billet grills, black emblem overlays, caliper covers! (WTF) or a thin $500 TRD skidplate, oh and glitchy screens.

I mean, there are literally hundreds of thousands of them across the country that meet these exact specifications and people are more than happy to let them go for absurdly low prices. Shit, you could even take a modern drive train and slap it into them and still be under $10k invested. What's stopping all of you from buying them?

I am enjoying Apple Carplay in my 2019 4Runner. Just replaced head unit with a much better Kenwood.
