I need a little help. As a side job I work on cars and my buddy has a 1983 Datsun maxima (nissan 810). It has the I6 L24-E (early multi-port fuel injection) motor with a automatic trans (RWD). There is no way to get any codes out of it that I know of (no check engine light on the dash that I can see either). I dont know much but I am at a loss for this. When it is started warm (sitting for 20 mins or so) the idle surges and stalls out (heat soak?) The Intake manifold is over the exhaust manifold, the stupidest design I have ever seen. After he gives it gas for a bit it goes away(leaking injectors? It also misfires a bit during this).

So my question is what or where do I need to look/start. I have cleaned the throttle body plate (It was really dirty) but it didnt help also the fuel filter was changed because the old one was 30yrs old. I also noticed a coolant line on top of the throttle body that was bulging and corroded at TB connection(Blocked?) That could be part of the problem. What else should I look for?

Nissan forums really only do the "Z" cars

Thank you so much for reading, any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Just a little update on this car...it now misfires when idling in park/drive (but not moving) fully warmed. The only reason I can tell is because the muffler has a hole in it and I can hear the fluttering air when it misses.

It has aftermarket ignition wires that appear to be old because just about every one of the outer rubber hosing is cracked. Like my runner(random misfires and I am gonna put new plugs in tomorrow...attempt to at least) I might suggest a new ignition system to my buddy and see where it goes from there.

Still any suggestions on the warm start thing are plenty welcome

So I was working the '83 datsun today...

It was overheating (No coolant and the radiator is very rusty inside and corroded) and because the heater core is busted I just ran a hose to connect the inlet/outlet and pulled the thermostat out and re-installed stuff and filled it up 50/50 and bled the system(I would have flushed the system but my buddy didn't want to). While bleeding the system I smelled gas and upon inspection of the injectors the #2 injector was leaking bad...I fixed it because the fitting was loose and I tightened it. Maybe those things were helping the fact that it couldn't start well warm but it couldn't have been those 2 things could it?

There are a lot of issues with this car maintenance wise but my buddy currently is unemployed and is hard core strapped for cash so I just help as best I can.
