The stock Dunlops just are not working out for me. I now have the second sidewall tear. They have done a good job of keeping a rock, which was shoved thru the tread, in place until I could get back home for repair. It just seems that I need to upgrade to a tire that can take the sharp angular rocks I drive over.

I know it iis not a fair comparison, but I have thousands of miles on my motorcycle tires riding on the same rocks without a flat. Maybe I should look for a knobby tire for the 4 Runner.

Seriously though, I will probably have to spend $1,000 on the BFG KOs. PITA having to buy 5 tires. Sure hope they can take the abuse.

Question for off-roading 4Runner owners: Are sidewall tears a common problem? What about rocks pushing thru the tread, puncturing the tire?

I have Wrangler MT/Rs. They are great off road and in mud. The road noise is a bit to much though. I would have gotten Revo's but sears doesn't sell them.
 
BFG's

Part of the design upgrade on them was that the treads come over the sidewall a bit and if you compare them to the old style they alsohave a "rim protector" a small protruding edge set up against the rim.
As long as you're not talkin knife edge rocks the KO's will do ya good service.

The BFG AT KO's are the only popular AT tires that have the triple sidewall protection (3 layers instead of two). I love them! The ride is good despite being such a heavy tire (Load Range C or D). Ride is smooth and quiet too! Quality is top-notch...BFG is a branch of Michelin.

The other AT tires (REVOs, Nitto) do not have triple layer sidewall...so, they are just as puncture-prone as your Dunlops.

The two most popular MT (mud-terrain) tires have triple sidewall protection...BFG MT and Goodyear MT/R. Both are great...BFG better in mud, whle MT/R better on rocks. But, they are noisy and wet performance is not that great. Braking and handling also suffer.
 
Look at some Toyo M-55's, not many people know about them even Toyo dealers but they are used in rock quaries and are great AT tires. They are really good looking and are better than the BFG AT's on the black top. I never owned any but had a friend that ran them for 80K+ miles with no problems and he loved them. I had BFG AT/KO's on my 95 Landcruiser and had 70K+ miles on them and they were great tires and I would also buy them again. I just think the Toyo's are unusual and a real find.
