i need a final verdict on hood scoops

Ive got a 97 limited and im interested in getting a scooped hood. ive heard people say its a straight bolt on to a 97. even though the year had no scooped option. Other people tell me it will not fit.

i dont suppose anyone wants to part with theirs?

Ive checked out jason burtmans carbon, but thats really not the look im interested in.

theres a couple places online claiming they have them for about 150, but shipping costs more than double the price

Id really be interested in finding a good auto wrecking yard in southern california so i could just head in a pick it up myself. im fine with having to paint the thing.


but once again this all goes back to Will it fit on my truck? i wish i had a friend with one so i could just try it on for size. anyone with imput would be amazing. i dont want to go out and spend the buck only to have it not fit. Toyota wont give me an answer. they say they could order it but if it doesent fit, i still have to buy it

It's the exact same hood, except with a hood. I just did it on my '98 (I can post up pics soon).

Remember, the Toyota OEM hood is really expensive, but very high quality. If you get an aftermarket hood, it'll be a lot cheaper but it might not fit perfectly (it'll fit, but the gap might be bigger than original) and might not perform as well in an accident.

IMO, if you get into a big accident, a hood won't save you, and in a small accident, it'll hold up fine. I had my body shop add special glue to the supports just in case though.

And no matter which hood you get, you'll have to get the scoop insert which is like $100 and you can't get it aftermarket.
 
Well it's actually the "hole that's not a hole" that goes into the real hole and then an insert that goes into the "hole that's not a hole". :)

Those are the two main parts. Then, you have insulation strips, and other misc. installation stuff. You can get them all from the dealer if you want it all to be OEM, but if you think you can master up something better (and people have done it) you can save some money.

say for instance at a place like that i were to go and get the headlights out of that 4runner, would they give deep discounts or no?
 
It depends on if they know what they've got and it's value but in most cases you should get a real discount.
